A Whole New Look, Maybe

Since it's 2018, I was wondering if we should do an update to how the wiki looks. I don't think it looks bad at all, but I think every once and a while we should make changes whether it be big or small to make the wiki better. One thing I would like to see is a dark mode, feel free to make your own suggestions, I'm not saying we have to but I just think some tweaks would be nice.Aioduck29 (talk) 18:40, 2 January 2018 (MST)

I'm fine with an overhaul as long as we can review it and vote if need be, I am very against a Dark Mode, as I don't see the need even on mobile view, at night, it's not like the wiki is a driving app. and there's no way to tell how all the various colors would look for infoboxes, sagaboxes, navboxes and userboxes on a dark grey or worse a very 90's black background. ~ OdysseyFan (talk) 05:21, 3 January 2018 (MST)

That’s fine we don’t have to have dark mode. Once we get some suggestions we could test things out and everything. I’m not even sure what the full capabilities are for a wiki as far as look and everything but we’ll just have to see. Aioduck29 (talk) 12:24, 3 January 2018 (MST)

I think that we should add the Q&A to the sidebar. Jason13579 (talk) 15:59, 5 January 2018 (MST)
Sorry that I've been absent this week; as I have said, school is priority. But along those lines, I've been thinking about a... secret... upgrade to AIOWiki, but I'll need Reddo's permission and help to do so. That upgrade alone should be enough to satisfy a 2018 change. For the final word on Dark Mode, I don't think that this version of MediaWiki supports it. As to Q and A, it's an AIOWiki feature so I don't think there's room on the sidebar.
If you have noticed, I have made some subtle changes to the wiki.
  1. Main Page:
    1. "Current Podcasts" box
    2. "Audio Player" link has been replaced with "Purchase/Download MP3"
    3. "Contents" has been changed
    4. "New Episodes" has been changed, too
  2. Episodes with parental warnings have a red Infobox instead of a yellow one
There may be more that I'm just not remembering right now. Scientific Guy (talk / AIOC Episode Timeline) 16:58, 5 January 2018 (MST)

Good ideas thus far. Why don't we bring this to the main page as a post and get suggestions that way and on the wiki's Facebook, get the most suggestions as possible. We compile a list and start experimenting. I don't have the permissions or don't know how to change the look or anything big on the wiki, so someone else will have to do that. Aioduck29 (talk) 17:24, 6 January 2018 (MST)

Write up the copy, I'll post it on facebook... ~ OdysseyFan (talk) 17:30, 6 January 2018 (MST)

I believe, if it's acceptable, that I would be the one to implement and have the final word on the changes. Can you consent to that, OdysseyFan? As to the post, would the post I made on Christmas suffice? I think that would say it all. Scientific Guy (talk / AIOC Episode Timeline) 08:08, 7 January 2018 (MST)

I don't have any issues with you implementing the changes, but as far as you having the final word about what changes we make, we were gonna vote on it. Also I would love to help you with the podcast as well BTW, I emailed you about it. Aioduck29 (talk) 20:17, 7 January 2018 (MST)

I already posted to facebook asking for input with help from Aioduck29. I'm good with looking at new design ideas. ~ OdysseyFan (talk) 13:05, 8 January 2018 (MST)

Probably will need something like this: ~ OdysseyFan (talk) 12:50, 10 January 2018 (MST)

I like this. Good idea. Unfortunately it's impossible to use without Reddo or Shadowpaw (sad face emoticon). Scientific Guy (talk / AIOC Episode Timeline) 18:33, 10 January 2018 (MST)
So Reddo added that Extension but I had another thought instead of making images, what if we create a template with an IFRAME and a background image of the "Rays" then whatever text we type in would show up as that and then maybe we can just have it do a random one like the random quote but just random news box???~ OdysseyFan (talk) 11:51, 18 January 2018 (MST)
I saw your sandbox for it; the news section on the Main Page is already easily formatted to read, so maybe we could work this into something else, like New Releases...? Or are you looking into a new main page design altogether?Scientific Guy (talk / AIOC Episode Timeline) 16:22, 18 January 2018 (MST)
I've put the <slideshow> in Template:New Episodes; are you okay with the changes I've made to the main page so far? Scientific Guy (talk / AIOC Episode Timeline) 17:27, 18 January 2018 (MST)
So just need to figure out how to get this to work and we could shorten that section/combine with news like I was saying... News:New_Releases\sandbox ~ OdysseyFan (talk) 11:37, 19 January 2018 (MST)

I think we need to add a daily article. Each day we put up a random article on the main page. It might make it look more professional.(Conniekendall fan (talk) 23:18, 18 January 2018 (MST))

Conniekendall fan, that sounds like a good idea. Could you elaborate further? OdysseyFan, I figured out the sandbox you mentioned!! What I had to do was put <div style="width:???px"></div> around images themselves (replacing ??? with the px) in Template:New Product. It won't work unless the div is right up against the brackets of the image. Scientific Guy (talk / AIOC Episode Timeline) 19:29, 19 January 2018 (MST)

On the real wikipedia (not saying ours isn't real) they have a daily random article. If we have one, it will make it look more important, more professional, and it might make the site more popular.(Conniekendall fan (talk) 11:04, 20 January 2018 (MST))

Actually, we're a completely different entity from Wikipedia and the Wikipedia Foundation. Our only connection is that we both use MediaWiki software. On that note, what Wikipedia does is have an elite group of users summarize a featured article for every day of every year. That would be a bit tedious and maybe unnecessary; I'd have to see the details on how it would make us more important, professional, and popular besides just looking more like WP. We could look into something similar but simpler, though. Scientific Guy (talk / AIOC Episode Timeline) 12:28, 20 January 2018 (MST)

ok that would be nice(Conniekendall fan (talk) 15:57, 20 January 2018 (MST))

Character ratings

Could you tell me how the average user ratings for characters work? I always see those on the character pages right above the episodes they've been in, and I'd like to rate characters, but I don't know how. FlYiNg FiSh-YoShI SaN (talk) 17:09, 5 January 2018 (MST)

Those average user ratings are just what they say they are: the average rating of all of the episodes in which a character has appeared. For example, if a character appears in 3 episodes with ratings of 80, 90, and 100, his rating will be 90. There is no "systematized" way to rate a specific character. Scientific Guy (talk / AIOC Episode Timeline) 19:31, 5 January 2018 (MST)

Got it, thanks FlYiNg FiSh-YoShI SaN (talk) 12:42, 6 January 2018 (MST)

The AIOWiki Podcast "Casting Call"

(Originally posted on AIO forums The Town of Odyssey and The Soda Shop)

Hello, everyone! I am Lee, and along with Arista Maxwell, we host a small Odyssey fan podcast, the AIOWiki Podcast. I have been thinking up some new ideas in my mind about how to bring more members onto the podcast, and I just had an idea.

What if everyone joined the podcast?

Here's my plan: Podcast #15 should approximately be the next podcast without special sections (reviews, etc.), and so I might be able to let other fans (you all) have some lines on that one. It wouldn't be too much, just about one or two minutes of recording lines and that'd be it. If you're interested, feel free to add a comment or email me. Thanks, and I hope you join! Scientific Guy (talk / AIOC Episode Timeline) 19:44, 5 January 2018 (MST)

I'm interested in doing it. Whenever you need me just shoot me an email and I'll do whatever. Aioduck29 (talk) 08:07, 6 January 2018 (MST)

i just listened to part of the preview. you guys are awesome!!!!!!!!(Conniekendall fan (talk) 16:02, 20 January 2018 (MST))

Thanks for everyone who's responded so far. I've sent out emails (and a PM to one of you) with the information. This will still be open for about two more weeks, when it will be time to actually record, so if you'd still like to join and haven't responded yet, please do so! Scientific Guy (talk / AIOC Episode Timeline) 11:04, 18 February 2018 (MST)

Template:Episode Mentioned

I have designed this template to tell when characters are mentioned in an episode. There is not a comprehensive list yet, only categories that can be created. Please do not create these categories until we can decide on a system for them.

Here's how it works. For example, #831: “Crash Course”:

{{Cast and Mentioned
|{{Episode Cast
| Character1 = Eugene Meltsner
| Actor1 = Will Ryan
| Character2 = Buck Oliver
| Actor2 = Robby Bruce
| Character3 = Connie Kendall
| Actor3 = Katie Leigh
| Character4 = Jules Kendall
| Actor4 = Shona Kennedy
| Character5 = Katrina Meltsner
| Actor5 = Audrey Wasilewski
|{{Episode Mentioned
| Character1 = John Whittaker
| Speaker1 = Connie Kendall
| Character2 = Jebidiah Skint
| Speaker2 = Buck Oliver
| Character3 = Olivia Parker
| Speaker3 = Eugene Meltsner
| Character4 = Renee Carter
| Speaker4 = Eugene Meltsner
| Character5 = Mrs. Kramer
| Speaker5 = Eugene Meltsner

Which gives...

Heard in episode

Role Voice Actor
Eugene Meltsner Will Ryan
Buck Oliver Robby Bruce
Connie Kendall Katie Leigh
Jules Kendall Shona Kennedy
Katrina Meltsner Audrey Wasilewski

Mentioned in episode

Character Mentioned By
John Whittaker Connie Kendall
Jebidiah Skint Buck Oliver
Olivia Parker Eugene Meltsner
Renee Carter Eugene Meltsner
Mrs. Kramer Eugene Meltsner

Template:Cast and Mentioned is needed to get the alignment side-by-side. I can figure out how to give the ability to list two "mentioners" of a character (for instance, Whit is mentioned by both Connie and Eugene) if you really want, but if not I'll be happy. Scientific Guy (talk / AIOC Episode Timeline) 14:12, 7 January 2018 (MST)

Spectacular! Thanks for this. Just applied the template to #429: “The YAK Problem” to see how it works.
Will character mentions be reflected in Character Appearances this way? Or would this require a separate region, a la Character Mentions? Crnel (talk)
Hopefully yes, it will be part of Appearances; it certainly wouldn't require an extra region. I'll implement it eventually. Scientific Guy (talk / AIOC Episode Timeline) 15:42, 7 January 2018 (MST)
I added {{-}} to the end of the template, so it can be removed from the episode pages. Scientific Guy (talk / AIOC Episode Timeline) 19:57, 12 January 2018 (MST)
What would you think of doing something similar for animals that appear or are mentioned? The animals (example: Ferguson) already have pages so it wouldn't require a lot of extra copy - however since they already have a category it might be doubling up? Rachel Maxwell (talk) 08:31, 25 January 2018 (MST)
Sorry, just saw this. My thought is that animals are mentioned and appear much, much less than characters, it would be better to just keep track on the animals' pages. With characters, it would not be efficient to do this, since they are mentioned much more. Would that be fine?
Also, Template:Character appearances has been updated with a "Mentioned" section. Scientific Guy (talk / AIOC Episode Timeline) 12:28, 4 February 2018 (MST)
I think you're probably right. Rachel Maxwell (talk) 14:44, 6 February 2018 (MST)

Since AIO has now release two audiobook versions of the Imagination Station Adventures I think it would be worth while to add them as a navigation option under the Books section. I also think it would be worth while to add the navigation bar to the top of each as well.
While I am talking about it the AIO Club has the audiobook specific covers that could be added. User:Mdb17 (talk)

Ha, I have been using the wiki for years and following along with yalls discussions, just never felt the need to speak up. User:Mdb17 (talk)
That was my subtle way of saying please SIGN your edits ~ OdysseyFan (talk) 12:34, 18 January 2018 (MST)
I apologize, I have tried my best to follow the format but missed that detail. User:Mdb17 (talk)

Can we have another logo contest?

I wanted to know if we could have another AIOWiki logo contest. We haven't had one in 8 years so I think it would be good to have another. What does everyone think? Plus I want to know how to make one. Any ideas?(ConnieKendall fan!(talk) 23:02, 21 January 2018 (MST))

Actually we are voting on a new logo vs the old one on the Wiki Facebook page. It will end in a few days, right now the new one OdysseyFan made is winning. We'll just have to see. Aioduck29 (talk) 16:04, 23 January 2018 (MST)

I don't use facebook. ConnieKendall fan! talk 17:10, 23 January 2018 (MST)

Okay, I didn't want to publicly mention this, but I guess I have to to avoid problems later. I am currently hatching plans to make a new Logo with the previous logo designer, Eugene. Honestly, it feels like OdysseyFan's logo is more of a prototype, but the one I'm planning on having made is an upgraded version of the current one (updated Character images, etc.). If you will please stay patient with me, we can have a new, wonderful logo soon. Scientific Guy (talk / AIOC Episode Timeline) 18:49, 28 January 2018 (MST)

Standard Character Designation

What's standard now - designating multiple characters with the same name as a, b, etc, or as Mary (Biblical), John (apostle)? Rachel Maxwell (talk) 07:19, 24 January 2018 (MST)

Not sure. Will try to look into it though.ConnieKendall fan! talk 10:55, 24 January 2018 (MST)

OK, i looked into it and right now it's A,B,C,etc. We do that when there are multiple characters under that name. Hope that helps. ConnieKendall fan! talk 11:16, 24 January 2018 (MST)

So the Over the Airwaves designation for John is incorrect? Didn't want to go in and change it to a letter and be "fixing" it wrong. :) Rachel Maxwell (talk) 12:43, 24 January 2018 (MST)

i'll check it out and let you know.ConnieKendall fan! talk 14:27, 24 January 2018 (MST)

Ok, I checked and I believe it's correct. You could check with User:Scientific Guy to learn more. I was checking character disambiguation. But I think that the list you were looking at is already good enough. sorry if I'm so vague. ConnieKendall fan! talk 14:32, 24 January 2018 (MST)

It's just that there's John (apostle) and John (b), who is also the apostle John. So they need to be combined one way or the other. Rachel Maxwell (talk) 16:23, 24 January 2018 (MST)

Oh. Well I think that if you combine them, you should turn it to John (apostle). It's more descriptive, and easier to understand than letters. ConnieKendall fan! talk 00:06, 25 January 2018 (MST)

Organizations Template

Is there somewhere I'm supposed to update the Organizations template so it will auto-include new additions everywhere? I added a couple of stores and restaurants and added them in the individual organization's Navbox but didn't think about the overarching Organizations Navbox - where's the best place to add or do they just need to be added in each individual box? And how about on the pages themselves - where there's a list of all the bookstores, or all the restaurants. Is this still just a manual add? Thanks! Rachel Maxwell (talk) 13:37, 26 January 2018 (MST)

Can you add the links here to the new organizations you added? I'll take a look at them, it is probably the categories. I noticed you made the Papa_Luigi's page. Where is it not displaying? Aiow 07:33, 27 January 2018 (MST)
Organizations in Odyssey is where they aren't showing - I edited each individual template (ex:

) They do not seem to automatically feed into this template though - if I added them directly to the Organizations template would it feed down into the others? Or do we just have to edit each individual template?

. Rachel Maxwell (talk) 08:01, 27 January 2018 (MST)

What's throwing me is that the organizations aren't uniform - Holstein's Books has different templates than Finneman's Market so I'm not sure which is the latest and best way - I didn't notice they were different until I was already neck deep in adds. Rachel Maxwell (talk) 08:07, 27 January 2018 (MST)
I just edited the Organizations in Odyssey page so it will be all automatic now. (It is building the list off of the pages in the category). I'll look in to the sub templates now Aiow 08:26, 27 January 2018 (MST)
Awesome - thank you! So in the future to add an organization which template do I need to add it to? And are there additional categorizations I need to include? Rachel Maxwell (talk) 18:04, 27 January 2018 (MST)
You will not have to edit any template. (just the Organizations in Odyssey page, because that is still manual). Just add a new place page (lets use whits end) Whit's End, be sure you use the {{Infobox Places}} template and set the proper "type" in this case because whit's end fits more then one you would use something like this: type=Ice Cream Parlor | type2 = Discovery Emporium | type3 = Restaurant. (just look at one of the other pages to see how it is done.) Anyway adding that type argument to the Infobox Places template will add the category, and the Template:Organizations_in_Odyssey plus all sub groups get the data from the categories.
Likewise if there is some organization that has a page but is not displaying in its display template, it is because the category is missing from the page. (I encountered a few of those when going through the templates.) Aiow 15:59, 28 January 2018 (MST)
OK look at The Silver Wind Restaurant. It has the Places infobox template but isn't updating Restaurants template or Organizations template. What did I do wrong? Rachel Maxwell (talk) 14:09, 29 January 2018 (MST)
Yeah Prisons is doing something similarly weird. ~ OdysseyFan (talk) 14:26, 29 January 2018 (MST)
Now it's on there - maybe it just takes a little time to update? Rachel Maxwell (talk) 15:01, 29 January 2018 (MST)
Indeed dpl uses caching so yes there will be some delay between when you add a place, and you see it in the infobox templates. However you can clear the cache and the info box page will update. Just add ?action=purge to the end of the url for example Template:Organizations_in_Odyssey?action=purge then press the big "OK" button when it ask if you want to clear the cache. (the categories, in this case Category:Restaurants will update without any caching) Aiow 20:17, 29 January 2018 (MST)
Do you think you could do the same thing for the other type of places infobox? TV shows is the same way, requires an edit of the template itself to add a new one. Thanks! Rachel Maxwell (talk) 19:59, 15 February 2018 (MST)

Umm, not to intrude but every time i try to load a quote, it keeps coming up with this message to purge page and clear cache. So i do it and it loads the quote. But if i push "load another quote" again, it comes up with the message again. Is it a minor glitch or something? I don't know. New Logo Mock-up

Nathan has sent me new character images, so I've gone ahead and uploaded the mock-up for the logo that I'm going ask Eugene to make. Let me know what you think! Scientific Guy (talk / AIOC Episode Timeline) 19:34, 17 February 2018 (MST)

I'm still in the "getting use to the new character art" stage. (I like the old whit better). Any how I guess its ok. (I'm never a big fan of change just for the sake of change.) If eugene does not get back to you, I can probably make it for you. Aiow 20:31, 17 February 2018 (MST)
I realize that this is a minor issue and certainly not one that’s on you but it’s really bugging me that Eugene’s ring is on the wrong hand. Rachel Maxwell (talk) 21:55, 17 February 2018 (MST)
I hope i'm not speaking out of line here, but I like the new pictures and i think the mock-up is great. It looks cool and it looks more, shall we say modern? I hope we use it. ConnieKendall fan  talk Proverbs 13:20He who walks with the wise grows wise, but a companion of fools suffers harm. (Guestbook) 22:16, 17 February 2018 (MST)
HA! About his ring... the illustration Nathan gave me has his ring on the correct hand, but he's facing to the right. Maybe his hands could be hidden behind the logo or the ring Photoshopped out. Aiow, do you have Photoshop? You'd need to be able to make a carbon copy of the current logo (with Connie and Eugene blurred behind Whit, the same WIKI text, and the semi-transparent rays - all with transparency). Conniekendall fan, no, that's not out of line! Your opinion is very much valued for things like this! Thanks Scientific Guy (talk / AIOC Episode Timeline) 07:08, 18 February 2018 (MST)
Yes I have photoshop (and know how to use it). The ring is easy to fix. The only thing I'd have to create is the yellowish sun beams. Just send me whatever files you have that are not already on the wiki. Aiow 08:48, 18 February 2018 (MST)
OK I have been looking through the pictures of the characters. Two changes I want to propose. 1 Make Eugene's vest a dark blue. (historically it was always black, then it went to a teal/blue around 2010) 2 Make Connie's shirt green, because its Connie. (Switching Eugene's vets will complement the green on Connie.) I still don't like the white short sleeve whit, but if that what everybody wants. Aiow 09:13, 18 February 2018 (MST)
For me, the point of creating a new logo is to use the newest character images from Focus. I wouldn't recommend changing them (although I can appreciate those changes). We could use this Whit image but would be awkward because of his outstretched arm. I don't have any files that aren't already on the wiki. Those files are:
  1. File:Aiologo-2010.png
  2. File:Whit with bible.png
  3. File:Conniekendall-2017.png
  4. File:Eugenemeltsner-2017.png
Scientific Guy (talk / AIOC Episode Timeline) 10:57, 18 February 2018 (MST)
I FOUND THE FONT!! It's "Ravie". I've also uploaded a different idea, the only change being to use the Club logo instead and make the Text styled (shiny) white instead of styled/bordered yellow. (Or we could use the "AIO" official font, "HouseMovements-Custom".) Which logo looks better? Scientific Guy (talk / AIOC Episode Timeline) 14:18, 18 February 2018 (MST)

I like the 2nd one the best.ConnieKendall fan  talk Proverbs 13:20He who walks with the wise grows wise, but a companion of fools suffers harm. (Guestbook) 14:26, 18 February 2018 (MST)

I don't think we should do the 2nd one, A) it's an obvious ripoff, but B) it's altering their logo vs our current logo which uses their logo but doesn't alter it. I also think we should YES use the AIO Font ~ OdysseyFan (talk) 16:00, 18 February 2018 (MST)
It's a lot of white - all three characters have white shirts on and the AIO logo itself is a lot of white space; I appreciate not modifying the actual Focus images, but this isn't going to look as dynamic for us as it will for them as they use character images (mostly) individually. Side note that when I'm logged in I can't see the logo at the top left corner of the screen at all, is that normal? Rachel Maxwell (talk) 11:51, 19 February 2018 (MST)
Maybe (as long as it doesn't LOOK too edited) Whit's shirt could be red-ish and Connie's could be green-ish. About the top left corner, could you upload a screenshot? It's not normal. Scientific Guy (talk / AIOC Episode Timeline) 13:37, 19 February 2018 (MST)

The space where the icon should be is still clickable - it'll take me to the homepage. Rachel Maxwell (talk) 13:56, 19 February 2018 (MST)

You have a custom CSS for Monobook (User:Rachel Maxwell/monobook.css); that's probably it. Normal Monobook works fine for me. Scientific Guy (talk / AIOC Episode Timeline) 13:57, 19 February 2018 (MST)
Completely forgot about that - haven't messed with that in years. Thanks! Rachel Maxwell (talk) 15:10, 19 February 2018 (MST)

Check.svg Done I used to make the logo myself! What do you think? Does it need work? Would you like the AIO text instead of the Ravie text? Scientific Guy (talk / AIOC Episode Timeline) 19:33, 19 February 2018 (MST)

I don’t really see a difference in it and Option 1 except that the box is pulled higher - if it’s just going to look like option 1 I think it looks better with the box dropped. Also since Wiki is yellow it blends a bit too much with the yellow border. Maybe a heavier edge to “wiki” or change the font color of wiki to the font color of Odyssey?? Rachel Maxwell (talk) 21:21, 19 February 2018 (MST)
You did a pretty good job polishing up the image. However I too prefer seeing more of the characters. I'd keep the "wiki" as it is in the current logo. Now that we have support for a not-all-white-image :) I can give that a go (@Scientific Guy if you still want me too). I'll upload a quick wip later today. Aiow 06:53, 20 February 2018 (MST)
OK I threw something together. Like I said still wip, there are a few things that still need to be finished, but at least you all can see it and let me know if this is even something you like. File:Logo-aiow-01.png and File:Logo-aiow-02.png (I just linked to them, because this is starting to get long.) I for one think connie and eugene are too blurry (maybe we don't need any blur on them). Aiow 09:24, 20 February 2018 (MST)
I didn't like the old apron on whit, so I tried Scientific Guy's idea - whit in a red shirt. It works, but why stop there? Have a look at this one. Aiow 09:48, 20 February 2018 (MST)
Ha ha... Well, thanks for following through on making it! I'd like to go ahead and finish it up if that's okay; I'll match the character placements that you've done. Could you upload (temporarily) full-res images of Connie, Eugene, and Whit (with Whit in this color shirt, maybe a little lighter)? Full-res as in no quality drop and still PNG at 1820px, 4000px, and 1385px, respectively.
About the blur: I still like it, but I'm willing to change my mind, depending on what others think. Scientific Guy (talk / AIOC Episode Timeline) 17:11, 21 February 2018 (MST)
And the rays too, please? Scientific Guy (talk / AIOC Episode Timeline) 17:41, 21 February 2018 (MST)
Well I can upload the edited characters, but I did not do them at full size. I'd have to completely re do them. Remember the logo is 135x135 so even on a high dpi display we are only talking about a 270x270 image. I have no problem with you making the image (I don't care about who gets the credit here), however it seems I have better tools to make this. For example when you scale down an image this much it needs to be sharpened. (that is one of the things I did not show in the wip I uploaded, but have done.) I'd be happy to work with you, so that the logo turns out the way you like. I'm not trying to be a pain, but I hope you can see my point of view that if I'm making the three character images and the background I might as well put it together and polish it. Aiow 07:25, 22 February 2018 (MST)

No problem at all! After changing the two logos on the right to 300px, MediaWiki seems to render them sharply enough. If it needs more, can you take the 1400px and sharpen it down to 300px? If not, I'd prefer that you handle this from here, but I've been using Pixlr and it doesn't look like the layered format is the same. Here's a link to it and if you can recreate it in Photoshop that would be fine. Scientific Guy (talk / AIOC Episode Timeline) 15:56, 22 February 2018 (MST)

I'm not sure what you mean? I thought you wanted the character's shirts color changed? If I was just sharpening the one on the right you made, we would not have that. I see no need to make a1400px version of the logo. (I can make it at say 600px) then also output a smaller one. Alright just to double check, this is what I will do: take your newest version as the template. Switch Eugene's ring and watch. Change the color of the character's shirts whit in the red, Connie in green and Eugene in darker blue (like I had in my wip logo). Add the shadow under the AIO logo box. Add the background rays. Sharpen the images, as needed.
I noticed you change the "WIKI" text slightly. You want me to copy your changes or use it as is (like in the current logo)? PS As you probably noticed, I made Connie's body slightly wider (was thinking of girls body image stuff. Don't want someone getting any ideas from a too thin image.) If your ok with that change, I'll keep Connie's body wider. Aiow 18:38, 22 February 2018 (MST)
Sorry for the confusion; what I meant is that you could edit Whit's shirt and Connie's shirt in their individual images (keep the normal width for now; let's see if Rachel or OdysseyFan agree or not) and send them to me. I'll replace the images I have with those in the layered project. I'd like to see how it works if I try it that way. Scientific Guy (talk / AIOC Episode Timeline) 19:53, 22 February 2018 (MST)
Oh. That's not what I got from your last message. I agree that we should have more input on Connie's width. I'd like to hear what User:FlYiNg_FiSh-YoShI_SaN and User:Arista_Maxwell have to say about this. I can do the individual images, but I'm also working on the whole logo. PS you never responded to my email. Aiow 08:54, 23 February 2018 (MST)
Since you asked I still hate the whole idea, and don't see the point of updating the logo to the same logo with just new character images. I think we need a new logo entirely, something more streamlined without the characters. and it needs to be used not just on the site but also on Facebook, etc. so we need variations of it in the proper dimensions for that. ~ OdysseyFan (talk) 09:58, 23 February 2018 (MST)
To Clarify, I think the Characters can be add to the HOME page image Welcome-logo-updated.png with updated logo and even the facebook BANNER (ie Cover Photo) but the basic LOGO for the upper left corner needs to lose the characters and be simplified. ~ OdysseyFan (talk) 10:11, 23 February 2018 (MST)
I see, and I partly agree. Reddo said that he'd update the logo, so I've sent him our versions.
Also, I'm trying out rays. Scientific Guy (talk / AIOC Episode Timeline) 16:31, 23 February 2018 (MST)

As previously stated I agree with OdysseyFan, I do like the ones you've made better than the current, but I don't feel like it's quite ready. If we go with something like that I feel like it would need some more work. I gave my two cents, have a goodnight.  Aioduck29 (talk) 19:10, 24 February 2018 (MST)

I have made a large version (1000px square). I stayed as close to the current logo as possible, even recreating the "defects" in the WIKI text. Let me know what you think. I'll upload the recolored character art soonish. PS having one this big is just for viewing, if you like it I'll make a smaller version. (Even viewing the thumb on right does not render properly.) File:Logo 2018 Scientific Guy-Aiow.png
Scientific Guy's / Aiow's near-final
Moved my near-final down here. Thanks so much for uploading the colored images; I think that it's done (unless you want bigger rays). I don't think that the defects are necessary, but I could take them and add them in if you'd like. Connie and Eugene are both blurred slightly, with Connie still at a size 6 waistline. Aioduck, could you look over this one and see if you can be specific about what we should change? Scientific Guy (talk / AIOC Episode Timeline) 17:44, 25 February 2018 (MST)

Hmm... "Ravie" is and will always be my favorite typeface for "WIKI." The "Odyssey" font doesn't quite work for me, although I suppose it could be used. Personally I believe that updates should be made with a reason besides merely the sake of updating; besides, Ravie has become a sort of "trademark" for the Wiki. New Categories

I had a couple of ideas that need some steel-on-steel; Media Wiki has the capability of including clickable maps (or pictures) where, when you click on something within it you go to a different page based on what you click on (like if there's a picture of Mt. Rushmore you can click on each President to go to their Wiki page). What would y'all think about having a clickable map of the US (and/or globe since several episodes have taken place around the world) where you could go to see all the episodes that had taken place in that location? We'd just not include episodes that took place entirely in Odyssey (or maybe have a little icon specifically for within-fictional-AIO-surroundings for those). We all know there are a dozen episodes that take place in one way or another in Chicago, but there are a great deal of episodes around the country - several in Alaska, Hawaii, California, DC - it just seems like a really cool tool. The "easiest" way seems to me to make it auto-feed into a list from the episode page somehow, something in the infobox maybe? Coding is above my pay grade though so I defer to y'all on that.

Second, what about categorizing some episodes by season - there are several that are specifically season oriented (winter, summer, etc) but beyond that there are a lot that deal specifically with a particular sports. #282: “The Fundamentals” is a basketball episode, #228: “A Game of Compassion” is soccer. While this would take a bit of work it would be a really great tool for people who deal with kids involved in sports. Anyway, like any idea, if these will work at all they'll need some collaborative suggestions.

Rachel Maxwell (talk) 10:31, 19 February 2018 (MST)

First: I like this idea, although a manual method I think would be better than automatic. Is there a Wikipedia/MediaWiki page that you can give as a reference?
Second: See here: Category:Episodes by Genre. Notice that "Sports Episodes" is already a category; feel free to add "Winter Episodes", "Summer Episodes", "Basketball Episodes", or "Soccer Episodes", if you'd like. Scientific Guy (talk / AIOC Episode Timeline) 14:02, 19 February 2018 (MST)
Here's a MediaWiki page on it: Extension:ImageMap. Rachel Maxwell (talk) 14:22, 19 February 2018 (MST)
Yes, yes, I think this is great. Reddo seems to be busy right now but he can be asked later. Scientific Guy (talk / AIOC Episode Timeline) 17:47, 19 February 2018 (MST)
My only issue with manual adds is that something always gets left off a list like that - if it’s plugged in somewhere else you’re less likely to miss it. Like Organizations in Odyssey - manualing editing the list means that things can be overlooked easily - it’s an extra step that’s easy to forget. Having the infobox feed the data into the template keeps that from happening to the template itself. I’m not opposed to manual adds, I just want it to be as easy to keep updated as possible. Rachel Maxwell (talk) 21:26, 19 February 2018 (MST)
I like the idea of a map where you can click on a state and see all the episodes the took place there. For something like a map, yes we can absolutely make that automatic. However why would we use an image map (that is the coding name for it), I would much rather see an actual map (, google maps, bing maps, etc), with markers for each episode in their corresponding location. That would make the interaction, much more natural. Plus it would elevate the multiples in same location problem. But other things like the album 50 image, would work wonderfully with the extension. I would be in support of getting that extension, if for no other reason then remaking the album 50 poster, all inter linked to the wiki. Aiow 06:44, 20 February 2018 (MST)
I don't have a problem with markers, we'll just have to have some sort of standard for where it goes if the episode mentions a state but not a city; like in #516: “Bassett Hounds” they're just "in Alaska". I mean sure they land in an airport but the episode itself takes place somewhere-we-don't-know-where-exactly. Rachel Maxwell (talk) 16:02, 21 February 2018 (MST)

Unnamed/Generic Characters Standardization

Hello all! As I started going through the episodes again, I noticed there are a lot of generic characters being added. This is fantastic, especially those with voice actors, but I figured there needed to be some sort of format/category. Tonight, I developed the unnamed character category for characters that are heard from but do not have a first name or last name. Here are some rules I have been following for generic/unnamed characters:

  • If last name and gender are known, then name the character Mr. or Mrs. (i.e. Mr. Blake).
  • If a character is referenced by their occupation (i.e. Mom, Police Officer, Announcer), we need uniform character types and then explicitly separate different characters.
    • i.e. Someone that is a waitperson or server is being referred to as a Waiter or Waitress (depending on gender).
    • If the occupation appears in more than one episode, we need to distinguish between different characters. For example, the character titled Police Officer in #29: “Rumor Has It” is most certainly a different character than the Police Officer in #776: “A Daughter's Love”.
    • When there are multiple characters with the same occupation name (i.e. Police Officer), use the name convention of Occupation (a), Occupation (b), starting with the character that appears first to the character that appears last.
      • This rule is hard to follow sometimes when a character is being added later, so I think just add it to the next available letter.
      • If Occupation (a) does appear in more than one episode, then make sure to stay consistent and keep that character with the episodes it appears in.
      • A disambiguation (i.e. Waitress (disambiguation)) page can be added later so people know which character they may have been searching for.
  • Do not use descriptive adjectives, if possible. For example, instead of calling a character Whit's End customer, name it Customer (a). The description of the character can be included on their page. For example, Customer (a)'s page would state that they were an unnamed customer at Whit's End in episode XXX. Customer (a) interrupted John Whittaker to order a Wod-Fam-Choc-Sod.
  • Add unnamed character as a type for the new character pages.
  • Use character_show in the episode to show Occupation instead of Occupation (a).
  • Use | name = on the character page to display Occupation instead of Occupation (a).

Thoughts on this standardization? Any characters that you can think of that are hard to categorize? Any disagreements with calling all waitstaff, servers, etc. as waiter or waitress? Also, do you think it is okay to reference all customers as customer, regardless of the business they were a customer at? Stop Wooton' Around (talk) 22:04, 8 April 2018 (MDT)

I think this is a great idea for categorization. It's simpler and it's a good change from what we are doing. If we're taking votes, than I vote yes. ConnieKendall fan  talk Proverbs 13:20He who walks with the wise grows wise, but a companion of fools suffers harm. (Guestbook) 22:11, 8 April 2018 (MDT)
I'll be thinking about this, in the meantime I have two thoughts. First, if we have the system set up as (a), (b), and (c), and another character is found chronologically between (a) and (b), I think it would be confusing to have them out-of-order. Second, {{{name}}} could change the way the template searches for categories with the character. Other than those (which can be fixed) I think we should get to working on this. It's always been a pet peeve of mine! Scientific Guy (talk / AIOC Episode Timeline) 17:39, 9 April 2018 (MDT)
I am totally okay with making sure they are in chronological order, it will just mean that when someone adds an older character, they will just have to be sure to retroactively change the following characters. Eventually, this will not be a problem because all the characters will have been added. Until then it will just mean a little bit of work, which is okay by me. Additionally, I am not sure what you meant about the {{{name}}}. On character pages it changes changes the display within the infobox. See Mom (a). Stop Wooton' Around (talk) 20:25, 9 April 2018 (MDT)
As the one most responsible for adding so many unnamed characters recently, I agree that this is both good and necessary. Like Scientific Guy I do wonder about the mechanics of using the (a) (b) (c) suffixes for chronology. Up until now I've tried to avoid doing this, planning to wait until as many unnamed characters as possible have been added from all the episodes: it would easier to go back and sort out the chronology afterward than to try to retroactively reorganize them after all the letters have been used. Crnel (talk)
What I mean by {{{name}}} is Template:Character appearances. If Boy (a) and Boy (b) appear in different episodes, but both are called "Boy" on their pages, the template will think they're the same character. This isn't really a problem and can be changed in the template. Scientific Guy (talk / AIOC Episode Timeline) 13:59, 10 April 2018 (MDT)

I am following too. Just so you know. And I agree, it's more like a blog. ConnieKendall fan  talk Proverbs 13:20He who walks with the wise grows wise, but a companion of fools suffers harm. (Guestbook) 09:49, 10 April 2018 (MDT)
I would think that blogs would be more centered around opinionated articles. The upcoming posts shouldn't have any text components (if all goes well), and they should stick more to "News." If that still falls under the definition of a blog, I'll eat a shoe. It may not be a real shoe, but I will eat it. Scientific Guy (talk / AIOC Episode Timeline) 12:47, 10 April 2018 (MDT)

Could there be a discussion page to discuss the topic of the current poll?

I have wondered about this for some time and i think it would be a nice addition after seeing some polls in the past i have wished that there was a page where we could discuss the topic of the poll or put down our actual answer if it is not part of the poll e.g. in the get in the show poll i would have voted for no i don't live in America if it had of existed but as it didn't i voted for no i didn't have enough time. if there was a discussion page for the subject of the poll i could have put it there. Thepaulinatior (talk) 21:19, 14 May 2018 (MDT)

First, be sure to sign your posts when you post to a talk page with ~~~~. Secondly, I wouldn't be opposed to a disqus to the poll. I certainly think we need to be careful to stay true to being an encyclopedia, but I would put the polls in the same category as recent news posts. Just my two cents. S.O.S. 2.0

Help! Today's episode is broken again! Jason13579 Jasonwhittaker-2.png (talk) (Guestbook) (Email Me) Sandbox job 3:2He said: 08:42, 10 April 2018 (MDT)

Yeah. I would've brought this up last night but I though it might be my browser or something.ConnieKendall fan  talk Proverbs 13:20He who walks with the wise grows wise, but a companion of fools suffers harm. (Guestbook) 09:47, 10 April 2018 (MDT)

If this happens in the future, just find the schedule page for the date (Schedule:2018-04-10 in this case) and make sure it matches the episode page. Today, "Than" was capitalized when it shouldn't have been. Scientific Guy (talk / AIOC Episode Timeline) 12:36, 10 April 2018 (MDT)

KYDS Radio naming convention

According to the Official Guide, KYDS Radio is actually now called Kids' Radio (while it was once called KYDS). I personally am convinced that we should change the wiki to match this. Any thoughts? Scientific Guy (talk / AIOC Episode Timeline) 14:38, 15 April 2018 (MDT)

I am okay with switching it, especially if the Official guide says it is Kid's Radio. KYDS can still be its call letters even though it is called Kid's Radio. That is how must radio station names/call letters work. Stop Wooton' Around (talk) 15:15, 15 April 2018 (MDT) spells it as "Kids' Radio" on the episode summaries. +1 for changing it. Crnel (talk) 15:37, 15 April 2018 (MDT)
Agreed, it's easier to search it on the wiki. 3 votes total in favor of changing it.ConnieKendall fan  talk Proverbs 13:20He who walks with the wise grows wise, but a companion of fools suffers harm. (Guestbook) 21:20, 15 April 2018 (MDT)
So should I move KYDS Radio to Kids' Radio (station) or Kids' Radio (radio station)? Scientific Guy (talk / AIOC Episode Timeline) 16:46, 18 April 2018 (MDT)
Kids' Radio (station) sounds more intuitive. Not fond of the double use of "radio" in the second option. Crnel (talk) 17:26, 18 April 2018 (MDT)
Check.svg Moved. Will work on changing the name across pages. Scientific Guy (talk / AIOC Episode Timeline) 18:26, 18 April 2018 (MDT)

Parental Warning template

Not sure if this is on the docket already, but could a template be made for Parental Warnings, similar to the one used for Version Differences? Crnel (talk)

I'm currently working on episodes with a parental warning intro; once I finish the list I can implement a template. Scientific Guy (talk / AIOC Episode Timeline) 14:24, 16 February 2018 (MST)
(Moved the conversation down the page.) What sort of template would you like better? One built in to Infobox Episode Information or one like Vd? Scientific Guy (talk / AIOC Episode Timeline) 09:46, 21 April 2018 (MDT)
Sorry, I completely missed this question until now. I would think a template similar to the Vd may be more helpful due to the tendency of most people to gloss over details, such as those featured in the Infoboxes. Crnel (talk) 20:26, 3 May 2018 (MDT)

I think that this is where I should put this question.

Some of you may know that AIOWiki's 11th birthday is coming up, and I wanted to know if we should put it up in the news. We did last year, so I think we should do it this year. Thoughts? May's Club Episode

I don't know how to put it up, but according to the may clubhouse magazine, May's club episode is Mean and Green. Can I have help putting it up? Mentioned Redirects

This could just be me not understanding something, but it seems to me that the mentions for characters with more than one name (Katrina Shanks, Katrina Meltsner, Katrina Shanks-Meltsner), are not feeding into their appearances on their pages correctly. Only one name choice is feeding in. In Katrina Meltsner's case, only episodes which mention "Katrina Meltsner" are showing up in mentions, even though there are multiple episodes (see #323: “A Little Credit, Please” which mention her as Katrina Shanks. Glitch? Caching issue? Rachel Maxwell (talk) 13:23, 17 May 2018 (MDT)

Yep, so it will only show the mentions of the actual page name. This is the same case for characters that appear in an episode. To still show her name at the time of the episode but link properly do the following:
|Character1 = Katrina Meltnser (This is the actual character name that will properly show on their page)
|Character_show1 = Katrina Shanks (This is the name you want to be displayed in the infobox)
See #323: “A Little Credit, Please” to see the correct format. Cheers! Stop Wooton' Around (talk) 20:39, 17 May 2018 (MDT)
PS. There is also a caching issue. While Category:Episodes that mention Katrina Meltsner shows two episodes, it does not appear on Katrina Meltsner; however, all mentions of Katrina (regardless of her last name) should be in Category:Episodes that mention Katrina Meltsner so when the cache does clear, they will all appear on her character page. Stop Wooton' Around (talk) 20:41, 17 May 2018 (MDT)
Disregard the previous message, I purged the page and now both episodes that appear in Category:Episodes that mention Katrina Meltsner now appear. If they don't appear after you change the format, let me know and I'll purge the page. Stop Wooton' Around (talk) 20:43, 17 May 2018 (MDT)
Found one with Natalie Horton first and changed it but it wouldn't show on her page until I edited and saved the edit (which I did nothing to except edit and save). Is this a cache problem that will correct itself or am I going to need to edit/save any pages that need this update? Rachel Maxwell (talk) 11:36, 18 May 2018 (MDT)
If you go to your preferences > gadgets > Editing gadgets, you should see a Purge Tab option. If you select that and save, you should have a purge option under the More section of a page. This will force the most current revision of the page to appear. Stop Wooton' Around (talk) 11:56, 18 May 2018 (MDT)
