Cat Ratings

When you create characters, how do you get the cat rating feature to work? WikiFan 22:56, 15 December 2010 (UTC)

on the cat rating page just paste in

{{cat rating2|{{subst:PAGENAME}}}}<noinclude>[[Category:Category rating]]</noinclude>

and save, it'll genetate the number for you Reddo 23:29, 15 December 2010 (UTC)

Got it, thanks! WikiFan 12:50, 16 December 2010 (UTC)

Comments

For the current Album 53 news, when you click on the comments section, it puts up the Official Podcast 110 comment page instead. WikiFan 12:56, 16 December 2010 (UTC) The news also has 2 of the 110th episode of the official podcast. WikiFan 13:00, 16 December 2010 (UTC)

comment wasn't working wrong as i put the date was 10 instead of 15, there were 2 things for the podcast as you made a second one Reddo 14:24, 16 December 2010 (UTC)

Grandma's Christmas Visit

I'm not sure if it's just my computer, but when I try to play today's episode, I get a message saying, "file not found". I know we can't do anything about it, as the site is not part of AIOWiki, but does anyone else have that problem? WikiFan 21:13, 18 December 2010 (UTC)

It happened to me too. - Rocketrider231
Yeah they appeared to have accidentally put the wrong episode number in the MP3 link. I've put an Mp3 player below linked to the correct file. God Bless ~ Nate ~ Talk 07:09, 19 December 2010 (UTC)
Is that illegal? I find that the way you did it you can get any episode in album 51, or 52. Jared DeWhite 16:22, 20 December 2010 (UTC)
The files are lower quality then if you would buy the CD or download it from the AIO Download Store on CBD. They also have advertisments in them. So, if it is legal, it definetly has bad disadvantages. One of you admins could answer if it is legal to download them. Then the issue could be cleared up once and for all, since this has been a controversial subject between AIO fans. AIOCREFan 16:11, 21 December 2010 (UTC)
I don't think it was downloaded, simply linked to. However, we should get a word from an adminastrator. WikiFan

I realize that it was only linked to. However, it has been of great controversy among AIO fans if it is legal to download the episodes that are uploaded to FOTF's server for the Family Media Player. AIOCREFan 00:00, 26 December 2010 (UTC)

In my opinion downloading from that link is akin to using a DVR to record tv shows later, it might be legal, but the tv station and the makers of the show won't be happy about it, they want you to watch it on tv so you can see adds or buy it in a box set so they can money, just the same FOTF wants you to buy the episodes to get money to keep making the show rather than getting a free download.
The question of legality of it depends a lot on where you live, but in my mind if you are a true fan and want the show to continue you'd buy the episode instead of trying for a free download
This is in know way reflective of FOTF's position just my own thoughts Reddo 00:57, 26 December 2010 (UTC)

Family Trees

I notice that when I'm on the homepage and I go to the family trees, whenever I'm not logged in it shows 27 family trees, but there are 40, and whenever I am logged in it shows the right amount.Jared DeWhite 14:30, 19 December 2010 (UTC)

it's because we use a caching system to speed up the site. The pages on the wiki aren't really saved anywhere complete with templates and values, instead each page is generated each time a viewer goes to it, this causes a lot of strain on the server and slowed everything way down so to speed it up i put in a caching system, what it does is ~once a week the server goes through each page and makes a copy of it complete with the templates in it. then when a page is viewed the server checks if they're logged in, if they are it regenerates the page for them, if they aren't then the server loads the old copy of the page. It's unfortunate that we have to do it like this but it's the only way to keep descent speed on our server without spending more. just wait a few days and it'll update Reddo 20:31, 19 December 2010 (UTC)
Great, Thanks! Jared DeWhite 22:42, 19 December 2010 (UTC)

Administrator

How do you become a administrator?

I think that how it works is that when they need administrators they ask who wants to be one. If you were thinking about becoming an admin, here is a small tip: Being an administrator requires a lot of commitment to AIOwiki. If you are busy and only go on it a few times a weeks, then I advise you not become an admin. - Rocketrider231

wiki

How do you make a Wiki? How was this one made? Is it a part of a bigger website? Proverbs 31:30Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised. ~ Aria ~ (talk) 19:11, 29 December 2010 (UTC)

I think it was made with something called MediaWiki WikiFan
you have to buy a domain name, then get it set up to go to a server and then you have to install the open source mediawiki program and have it set up the databases for you. Reddo 22:10, 29 December 2010 (UTC)

Mediawiki 1.16

i upgraded almost all of the extensions to the newest version today, there are a few that have to be upgraded after 1.16 gets installed but other than those few i think we're about ready to upgrade. As far as i can tell there are no new features in the new versions and it doesn't appear to have broken anything, but if you notice something strange going leave a message and i'll look into it.

I'll keep you posted on the upgrade progress, there's probably going to be an hour or two period where i'll have to lock the database while the upgrade is going on (there's some pretty huge backend changes and stuff will break before it's done) but i'll let you know when that is before it happens Reddo 05:24, 14 September 2010 (UTC)

I assume that the mediawiki upgrade is why the in-page audio player looks different than I remember. What I don't like about it now is that it has no scale; no end marker or background. You can kinda see how long it is by the loading bar, but that disappears after all the content is loaded. Is there a way to change it so there's maybe just an outline or end marker for the audio clips? It's not really broken (I don't think), but it bothers me. Proverbs 22:9A generous man will himself be blessed, for he shares his food with the poor. Elementus Green 10:18, 18 September 2010 (UTC)
No, we haven't actually upgraded yet. We just changed the mp3 player to have more variables and therefore appearance options.
{{mp3|Album 52 promo 30.mp3}}

produces

So there is always a scale, it's just 1px tall, and is a very light gray.

{{mp3|Album 52 promo 30.mp3|color=abcdef|bg=123456|download=yes|title=MP3 PLAYER EXAMPLE}}

produces

And you can obiously use any number of the variables. God Bless ~ Nate ~ Talk 15:22, 18 September 2010 (UTC)

due to myself and shadowpaw being fairly busy recently we've decided to delay the upgrade till 1.17 comes out, 1.18 is already in development and 1.17 is just in bug fixing mode right now so it should be out soon, it comes with a new installer that should make future upgrades easier Reddo 06:08, 2 January 2011 (UTC)

Real-Time Timeline

I dunno if anybody remembers, but a couple months ago I mentioned the idea of a real-time timeline for AIO -- tracking events and how they must happen in realtime (birthdays, dates mentioned, holidays, seasons, you know). Well, I've got it typed up and don't know what to do with it. If anybody has any ideas, you're welcome to it -- I don't want to post the whole thing without knowing how to format it or whatever because it's huge, but anybody that wants it, if they want to post it here or anywhere else, you're welcome to email me through the wiki for it. Rachel Maxwell 05:05, 9 November 2010 (UTC)

I'd be interested in it! But I don't know how the email thing works. Proverbs 31:30Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised. ~ Aria ~ (talk) 09:29, 9 November 2010 (UTC)
it's now avaiable for download here Reddo 16:36, 12 November 2010 (UTC)
I have made several corrections to the file (they were all spelling). How could I get it to you, Reddo? AIOCREFan 18:44, 12 November 2010 (UTC)
I enabled rft uploads so you can just upload it to the wiki Reddo 19:53, 12 November 2010 (UTC)
What program did you guys use to open the rtf file? I tried using WordPad (which didn't open it correctly) and OpenOffice.org (which didn't save it correctly. Evidently, it can not save in rtf format). Could you please point me to a program that will work? AIOCREFan 14:51, 13 November 2010 (UTC) (As a side note, please check this page.)
I put it onto my google docs account for editing now here this was we can all work on the same copy and won't duplicate efforts, let me know if you still have problems with it Reddo 17:49, 13 November 2010 (UTC)
This is really cool! It needs a lot of work to be usable though--it didn't make a lot of sense to me. If only I had a lot of time on my hands . . . Thanks for your work on this, Rachel. MarvelousMarvin 17:02, 7 December 2010 (UTC)

end of season awards

I contacted nathan hoobler about putting up clips for best line/scene from past EoS awards and he said go for it. I'm currently busy with finals in my classes and relatives, but if anyone has free time it's an option Reddo 06:43, 2 December 2010 (UTC)

Christmas Around The World

Does anyone really think it's Paul Herlinger in "Christmas Around The World?" I'm fairly sure it's Hal Smith (with clips cut from other episodes like in "Gone...").

i think it's paul but it's hard to tell due to the effects on his voice, i'll try sending Nathan an email and get an answer for sure though Reddo 06:16, 2 January 2011 (UTC)

family trees...with pictures?

I was thinking it would be cool to put all the pics the wiki has of characters into their family tree box. So when you see the name, you also see a mini pic. I tried it with the Barclay family, (didn't save it, just saw a preview), and it looked cool. Episode Infobox Album Image Cycle

I was thinking it would be cool if the albums the episode is in are not simply a list, but a "slideshow" of images. It will take a pretty good amount of coding which I don't really have the time to do, but I wanted to see what y'all think. If somebody has the time and knowledge to do so, I think the stuff that needs to be done will include:

  • adding a "link" parameter to the slideshow template
  • setting up some sort of dpl to get the album images for certain albums
  • setting up the episode infobox template to use those images of the albums the episode is included in

I think that's it. Thoughts? God Bless ~ Nate ~ Talk 00:45, 29 December 2010 (UTC)

Not bad. WikiFan
I've thought about doing this before but it only looks okay if it self scrolls, and then there's a usability issue with it that if a person clicks on it to go to the album page they could end up at a page they didn't want to be on.
There's also another problem with it, our server is already having problems keeping up to the demands that we're placing on it, caching can help but the extra power needed to load all those images for every episode page will probably be too much for it and would decrease the speed of the wiki by a fair amount Reddo 03:38, 29 December 2010 (UTC)

Quotes

I have not been around a lot recently, so I apologize if I am a little out of touch with things. But from a distance, there is something that I've noticed that needs fixing. Currently, the wiki is using quotes for the descriptions of albums like51, 52, and 53. Yet, the quotes do not say where the description is from. Also, all the rest of the album descriptions from 1 to 50 do not use quotes. The same situation is in place with the Imagination Station books. Peril in the Palace uses quotes for its description (again, without saying where the quote is from), but the rest of the Imagination Station books don't use quotes for their descriptions.

There are two problems with what is being done. First, when Shadowpaw started the wiki, he asked things to be kept consistent. Putting quotes on the descriptions of only some albums or books, and not on others, does not display consistency and looks sloppy. Second, the purpose of using quotes is to give credit to the original author of the text displayed. If quotes are used for descriptions or anything else, yet the author or source of the quote is not visibly given credit, the quotes may as well never have been used at all.

If users insist that quotes should be used for bodies of text that are not our own, than quotes need to be put on everything that is not our own. That means that episode summaries, cast and crew bio's, or anything that is not original to the wiki needs to be put in quotes.

Either everything that is not our own needs to be put in quotes (and the author or source given credit), or the quotes need to be removed.

Please note that in cases where large bodies of text are quoted from a retail product (i.e. see Odyssey for a section quoted from the Complete Guide), the quotes need to be kept.

Again, either everything that is not our own needs to be put in quotes (and the author or source given credit), or the quotes need to be removed.

Happy New Year! MarvelousMarvin 19:24, 31 December 2010 (UTC)

I'm all for removing the quotes around the summaries from those album pages, I don't think they're needed and i don't think they look good either Reddo 22:46, 31 December 2010 (UTC)
I think I may have started this trend after the hiatus. When new information kept pouring in I didn't always know the best way to present it. I put some of the summaries as quotes just so people, mostly on the wiki, would know the source that the information came from. You bring up a good point, though. If were going to use them, we'd have to be consistent and use them around every bit of text from another source, which would look cluttered. The quote template has its place more when quoting characters or other people within other articles. Erwin Springer [talk] 02:44, 3 January 2011 (UTC)

Creating Polls

Could someone tell me how to create a poll? AIOgeek 15:24, 4 January 2011 (UTC)

I will do an example poll. Which is your favorite Character that Walker Edmiston voiced. OK, first, you have to name the poll id. You could name it something like AIOgeeks_poll_1, or you could give it another name, but you have to name each poll its own name. Then one the second line you have to put the the poll's question. On the third line the way I have it is you can only vote one time by where it says type="()" if I wanted to make it so where you can pick more then one then change it to type="[]". Now I just have to put in the different option to voted for. In my case I have two, Bart Rathbone and Tom Riley. You have to put a | before each one. I hope this helps you. If you have any questions you can ask me on my talk page. Oh, one last thing you have to get a administrator to give you the results. Jared DeWhite 01:42, 5 January 2011 (UTC)

Userbox

How do you create a userbox? AIOkid - Mark 11:22-24 23:32, 9 January 2011 (UTC)

Go here first. There is a list there of the userboxes already created. To create a new one, put Template:Userbox/name in the search bar and click create this page. Then use the userbox template to create one. Here are the parameters:
{{Userbox|image=required image|required text|image_align=right or left, default is left}}

for example:

{{Userbox|image=CaseoftheSecretRoom2_Chick-fil-A.jpg|This user collects [[Chick-fil-a]] ''Odyssey'' tapes.|image_align=right}}

produces:

This user collects Chick-fil-a Odyssey tapes.
CaseoftheSecretRoom2 Chick-fil-A.jpg

Put something like that on that subpage you created. Next put:

{{Userbox/name}}

On your userpage to use it. WikiFan (talk) 23:39, 9 January 2011 (UTC)

|px=required number

Passages Covers

Is it okay with everyone if I move all of the Passages cover images to a new naming scheme? For example: File:Dariensrise-new.jpg to File:passages-book1-front.jpg and File:Dariensrise.jpg to File:passages-book1-front-old.jpg and File:Dariensriseold.jpg to File:passages-book1-front-original.jpg

Administrator

I would like to become an administrator. I will admit I don’t know a lot about HTML, but I am a quick learner. A few months ago I thought it would be neat to learn how to do a family tree, and so I looked back at old ones, and figured out how to do it. Now I have created over a dozen of them. It was the same way with polls. I was interested in having my own poll page so I learned how to do it, and also lots of people has started to do polls, and which only people who can get into the results are administrator’s, so I could get my poll results without having to bother you, and also I could get results for other people. Jared DeWhite 20:41, 15 January 2011 (UTC)

if you're only interested in looking at poll results you could just do it on your page, one option is to put
<qpoll id=Jareds_poll_9 showresults="2;color:blue;background:yellow;textcolor:#0000FF;">
then the results are shown after you vote on something, I did this to one poll on your page just you you can see what it looks like, if you'd like something else let me know Reddo 16:51, 18 January 2011 (UTC)
Great thank you. Is there anything you or I could do about getting polls 6, 7, and 8? Jared DeWhite (talk) 22:32, 18 January 2011 (UTC)
