Scripture

Hosea 14:1-9

1Return, O Israel, to the LORD your God. Your sins have been your downfall!

2Take words with you and return to the LORD. Say to him: "Forgive all our sins and receive us graciously, that we may offer the fruit of our lips. 3Assyria cannot save us; we will not mount war-horses. We will never again say 'Our gods' to what our own hands have made, for in you the fatherless find compassion." 4"I will heal their waywardness and love them freely, for my anger has turned away from them. 5I will be like the dew to Israel; he will blossom like a lily. Like a cedar of Lebanon he will send down his roots; 6his young shoots will grow. His splendor will be like an olive tree, his fragrance like a cedar of Lebanon. 7Men will dwell again in his shade. He will flourish like the grain. He will blossom like a vine, and his fame will be like the wine from Lebanon. 8O Ephraim, what more have I to do with idols? I will answer him and care for him. I am like a green pine tree; your fruitfulness comes from me."

9Who is wise? He will realize these things. Who is discerning? He will understand them. The ways of the LORD are right; the righteous walk in them, but the rebellious stumble in them.

Notes

Trivia
  • We learn in this episode that the mascot of Odyssey Middle School basketball team is an owl. Hence the team name "The Odyssey Owls" and the newspaper title, The Odyssey Owl.
  • Andre Stojka uses a familiar voice as the Odyssey Owl mascot: Since 1994, he has been doing the voice of Winnie the Pooh's Owl, a role he inherited from Hal Smith—the very first Whit!
    • The Owl also appears in the wraps of this episode.
  • With the exception of some shouted dialogue from movie theater patrons, all the characters in this episode are male.
Allusions
  • Brad and Pete have a brief discussion in which Brad says that playing the shorter Odenton team was like playing against a team from Lilliput. Lilliput is the fictional island country made up of tiny people in Gulliver's Travels, a fact he tries to share with the less well-read Pete.
  • Chang Fang's line "Wax on, wax off" in the end is a reference to the line spoken by Mr. Miyagi in the 1984 film, The Karate Kid.

Reviews

Quotes

Ryan Cummings: Princess Baba is the twin of Prince Jessup!

Owl Mascot: Hoo! Hoo! Let's go, Odyssey!

Chang Fang: You can be your own mascot. Rub your own heads.

Vance King: You want information? Well, tell them to watch the owl.
Murray: Watch the owl? That's it? Not watch for the itching powder I put in their shorts before the game? Or watch how their best player gets handcuffed to a fire hydrant in Albuquerque?
Vance King: Whoa, whoa, whoa. That's amateur stuff. We're dealing in advanced psychology.

Chang Fang: Listen to me team. To shoot the ball, you must be shot through the hoop yourself. Be the ball. Be the hoop. Be the scoreboard increasing by two after you shoot yourself through yourself.

Chang Fang: Do not despair, my team. Losing 78 to 72 is nothing to be ashamed of. Pure victory is the most elusive prize of all. Like shooting stars or photographic evidence of Bigfoot.

Vance King: I thought I was intense. This is going to be a long detention.
Chang Fang: Yes, it will be. Repeat after me. Wax on, wax off.
