Summary

Camilla is concerned that her newfound faith is wavering since she doesn't feel as excited about it anymore. Meanwhile, Connie tries to get Eugene and Katrina to break out of the routine in their marriage.

Plot

At Whit's End, Connie Kendall is gloomy because of the weather. John Whittaker tries to make her feel better. Then Camilla Parker enters and is in a great mood. She exclaims that she made bracelets that she is passing out that says "Jesus!". Connie and Whit both take a bracelet but Whit's doesn't fit. She tells them that she's having a bible study at her house the following night and they're both invited. Connie feels a little better. She takes a coffee over to Katrina Meltsner. Katrina thanks Connie, and then Eugene Meltsner stops by to talk to Katrina before heading home. Connie points out that Katrina didn't kiss Eugene on their anniversary of their first date. Connie proceeds to tell her that their marriage is in a rut. She predicts what Katrina and Eugene's routine is and nails it. She suggests that they do something spontaneous to celebrate their first date instead of chicken.

At the Parker house, David Parker is watching a football game. Camilla comes in and tells her dad about her idea to put memory verses on her cleats as a way to witness to her teammates. She asks to change the channel, and changes it to a televangelist. She cheers the guy on when he says Jesus, and this startles David. Camilla says if you can get excited about sports why can't I get excited about Jesus. David doesn't know how to respond, and Camilla goes off to do her own thing.

At the Meltsner house, Katrina and Eugene are about to go to bed, when Katrina notices that it's 10:03. This starts up a conversation about routine and spontaneity. Katrina expresses that they might be in a rut. They decide to do something different and attempt to stay up till three in the morning. They get snacks together and meet back up. Katrina has a hard time keeping up with Eugene's story, and then Eugene starts talking about grass and grass allergies. They have a hard time picking a topic and then decide to go to bed at 10:36.

At the Parker house, Camilla is with David and Eva Parker for her Bible study. They describe different qualities of God that they love. Camilla gets frustrated that no one else could come, and Eva encourages her to have another one and let people know further ahead of time.

At Whit's End, Eugene tells Connie about their late night conversation. Connie says that she will help put the spark back into their marriage. Eugene is hesitant, but Connie insists on offering her help. She suggests that Eugene and Katrina go to the restaurant where they had their first date. Then she proceeds to give him more tips.

At the Parker house, Eva tells Camilla that her soccer game was cancelled. Camilla is really disappointed. Meanwhile Eugene and Katrina go to a restaurant, and find out that the menu has changed since they last went there. Instead of lasagna they are forced to order nachos. They enjoy their nachos, until Katrina crunches down on a necklace. Eugene is frustrated, he requested that they encircle the dessert with the necklace not put it in the nachos. Katrina thanks him anyway. The band, Painted Flowers, begins playing a song from a musical that they both love. Eugene begins telling Katrina how much she means to him. The band gets louder, and Eugene has to adjust his volume so Katrina can hear him. Katrina tells him just how much he means to her, and like Eugene, has to yell her statements to him.

Eva finds Camilla asleep with her head on her bed. Camilla had fallen asleep while praying. Eva tucks her in, and says goodnight. Camilla is worried that if her prayers are so boring that she would fall asleep, then they must be boring to God, too. Katrina and Eugene leave the restaurant and they tell each other how much they appreciate each other through the daily things they do for each other.

At Whit's End, Whit is talking with Connie about Eugene and Katrina's dinner. Camilla enters feeling down. She tells them that she think she lost her joy. She is uncertain of whether she said the right words. She explains that she thinks she lost her faith because things didn't go her way. Whit explains that faith isn't a feeling, but that it's continuing to believe what's true regardless of our changing feelings. This cheers up Camilla, and she gives Whit a bigger bracelet.

That night, the Meltsners settled for a good night's sleep, and they decide 10:03 is just perfect.

Notes

VERSION DIFFERENCE: [view] In the broadcast version of this episode, Eugene’s line, “Her hair fell out... It didn’t fall out because of grass; the allergy was unrelated,” was cut.

  • Writer Marshal Younger based Eugene and Katrina's difficult restaurant conversation on the atmosphere in a real-life restaurant.
  • The original song "When You're In Love" in this episode was written by Marshal Younger and composed (and sung) by John Campbell. It can be listened to in its entirety as a bonus feature on the album.
In-Universe
Allusions
  • This episode's title is probably a reference to the Boston song of the same name.
  • Connie and Whit refer To Chopin's funeral march.
  • Though Parisian Nights (Katrina and Eugene's favorite musical) is the name of a movie, it is the title of a silent drama.

Quotes

Connie Kendall: You wanna know the reason why Tracy and Sam didn't end up together?
Katrina Meltsner: His nose amputation?
Connie Kendall: Because they took their love for granted! Let me guess your routine: You both get home from work. One of you makes dinner while the other does some other household chore. You eat together. You talk about your day. He talks about the atomic weight of tungsten. Then he clears the table, you wash the dishes. Then you're in the laundry room, while he's in the office catching up on some work. Then you both read a book in bed until exactly 10:00 when you go to sleep every night. Am I right?
Katrina Meltsner: We don't always go to sleep at 10:00.
Connie Kendall: Really? Then when?
Katrina Meltsner: Anywhere between 10:00 and 10:05.
Connie Kendall: Enjoy your chicken.

Katrina Meltsner: There's plenty to be said for getting out of a routine, too, though. The joy of spontaneity!
Eugene Meltsner: Absolutely. Why? Are you bored with me?
Katrina Meltsner: Never. I just had a conversation with Connie about keeping the romance in a relationship.
Eugene Meltsner: Ah, Miss Kendall. Of course. She searches for romance in a bag of trail mix.

Connie Kendall: Okay, um, it's obvious I need to step in.
Eugene Meltsner: No, you don't.
Connie Kendall: I'm gonna put the spark back into your marriage, Eugene!
Eugene Meltsner: I do not doubt your ability to take virtually any situation and set fire to it, Miss Kendall, but this is a personal matter.
Connie Kendall: Since when has that stopped me?

John Whittaker: Camilla, faith isn't a feeling. Our feelings change all the time—sometimes for good reason, other times because we're hurt or disappointed or any number of reasons. Faith is continuing to believe what is true regardless of our changing moods. That's why it's so important. It's a rudder keeping us on the course in spite of the storms of life.
Connie Kendall: Yeah. We all have good days and bad days. It's our faith in God that helps us through all of them.

Katrina Meltsner: Oh! Ow... Eugene?
Eugene Meltsner: What?
Katrina Meltsner: There is a necklace in my nacho!
Eugene Meltsner: You're joking!
