For Three Dollars More

“For Three Dollars More” is episode #718 of the Adventures in Odyssey audio series. It was written by Marshal Younger, and originally aired on October 27, 2012.

Summary

When Barrett questions the value of tithing, Matthew, Connie, and Whit send him on trips in the Room of Consequence to see the results of his actions.

Plot

John Whittaker (Whit) has been showing Matthew Parker how the Room of Consequence works. Barrett Jones enters Whit's End and begins talking to Matthew and Connie Kendall. Barrett says that he couldn't buy the Verminoids video game because he didn't have three dollars more. He tithed it in church. Matthew convinces Barrett to let him program an adventure to help him with his problem. Connie isn't sure if Whit wanted him to use it on someone, but Matthew goes ahead anyway. Barrett starts the adventure in his Sunday School class. He doesn't tithe, because he doesn't think that his three dollars will make any difference. He tells Katrina Meltsner, and she doesn't lecture him or anything. Later in church, Katrina stands up and has Barrett tell the congregation his theory about tithing. The pastor and the rest of the church also don't think that their money will make any difference, so they all stop tithing. Years later, after Barrett is an adult, he is at the place where the church used to be. The pastor is a beggar, and Katrina has a disease from rats, all because they stopped giving. Barrett stops the adventure outraged.

Connie convinces him to get back in, and she decides to program it this time. This time, Barrett doesn't give money for a camp for poor kids. Years later, Barrett is at a bank. A man starts robbing the bank, then recognizes Barrett. The man wasn't able to go to church camp because the church missed it by $2.97. Barrett gets out of the machine and once again is frustrated with the adventure he was sent on. Connie tells him that the best part was yet to come; the bank was going to explode.

Whit walks in and finds out about Matthew and Connie's mistakes. He programs the machine one more time. This time, Barrett and Whit go in and watch Barrett from 3rd person perspective. They skip to when Barrett is older and in college. Barrett won't help homeless people because he can't afford it. Then Whit and Barrett skip ahead to when Barrett is an adult and lives in a huge house. Matthew stops by and asks Barrett if he could help build a place for homeless kids to play, and Barrett refuses.

Whit and Barrett skip ahead again. Barrett refuses to help a man by not giving him a raise when he really needs it. Whit and Barrett skip ahead one last time, and future Barrett sees the community place for the kids. Barrett is sad now because everyone else is happy, and he's still miserable.

Whit and Barrett come out, and Barrett decides to tithe because he wants to give back because of all that God has given us.

Quotes

Barrett Jones: My voice is deeper. Wait a minute... my arms are hairy. I'm taller... I have sideburns! I'm an adult!

John Whittaker: Let's move ahead to when you're older, shall we?
Barrett Jones: Okay. Oh, you'll love my voice...it's so low and soothing!

Connie Kendall: Well, if you would just concentrate on the lesson...
Barrett Jones: Which one? The one about robbing banks, or homeless pastors?
Matthew Parker: Homeless pastors...
Connie Kendall: Robbing banks!
John Whittaker: I'm confused...

Katrina Meltsner: I have a debilitating disease... <coughs> caused by a rare bacteria disease carried by rats. Rats that were set free from the sewers because you decided not to give a tithe.

Bank Robber: They were two dollars and ninety-seven cents short of me going to camp!

Connie Kendall: Why'd you want to stop it, Barrett? The adventure's not over yet! The bank's gonna explode!
Barrett Jones: Now I'm really happy I stopped it.

Pastor Aldin: Can you people spare a dime?
Matthew Parker: Of course, Pastor.
Barrett Jones: Pastor?!
Matthew Parker: He's homeless now.
