Nothing But the Half Truth

“Nothing But the Half Truth” is episode #543 of the Adventures in Odyssey audio series. It was written by Marshal Younger and Torry Martin, and originally aired on May 1, 2004.

Summary

Wellington Bassett calls his twin brother, Wooton, for a bizarre favor--he wants Wooton to pretend to be him for a business meeting.

Plot

Wooton gets a call from his twin brother Wellington. Stuck at the Chicago airport, Wellington needs a favor: would Wooton go meet a business client of his? Strangely, he makes Wooton promise not to say a word. Of course, Wooton forgets-– especially when his humor is exactly why the business client Fox Fletcher likes him.

Meanwhile, at Whit's End, Trent is inviting his friends to a party that night. Marvin, staying at Whit's house, tells Trent that he's on restriction and can’t go. He's not allowed to go anywhere unless he's studying. Still, he shows up at Trent's front door. Marvin does about 5 seconds of studying, then joins his friends for paintball.

Wellington, meanwhile, is not happy with his twin brother. After a dinner and a golf game with Mr. Fletcher, the business deal is still not signed — and Wooton refuses to keep impersonating Wellington. Mr. Fletcher finds out about the trickery, and he makes sure Wellington never deceives him again!

Back with Whit, Marvin tries to hide the fact that he didn’t study. But Whit forces him to face the truth: “Even though technically you didn’t lie, your half-truth was designed to deceive me.” With Marvin likely getting a longer restriction, he and Wooton learn an important lesson about living truthfully — one hundred percent.

Quotes

Wooton Bassett: Okay, answering machine message take number 31. Hello, you've reached Wooton Bassett's answering machine. I'm home right now making an answering machine message, but I won't be here when you call, so if you'll kindly leave your number I'll call you back tonight, or maybe not tonight 'cause I have to take the Christmas tree down off my roof. Yes I know it's only May, but some of my neighbors are complaining, you know... <answering machine beeps>
Wooton Bassett: Aw man! Too long again? This is really hard! <phone rings>
Wooton Bassett: Oh! Hello, you've reached Wooton Bassett's ear. If you'll kindly say something then I'll say something back. Beep!

Wooton Bassett: I haven't had this much fun since I went shopping cart wrangling in the mall parking lot!

Wooton Bassett: According to my calculations I've told seven half truths today and that equals three and a half lies.

Fox Fletcher: He said, "The measure of man can be determined by two things: the love in his heart... and his ability to do the chicken dance."

Wooton Bassett: I don't even know how to play golf!
Wellington Bassett: Fake it.
Wooton Bassett: Well, how do you fake playing golf? Either you get it in the clown's mouth or you don't!

Marvin Washington: Trent! How do you get pink paint out of underwear?
Trent DeWhite: What?!

John Whittaker: And this speed is a little too powerful! <turns on fan>
Marvin Washington: Mr. Whittaker! It's sucking my eyeballs out of their sockets!
