For Whom the Wedding Bells Toll, Part 2

“For Whom the Wedding Bells Toll, Part 2” is episode #373 of the Adventures in Odyssey audio series. It was written and directed by Paul McCusker, and originally aired on September 13, 1997.

Summary

Someone is getting married in Odyssey … but who? Is it John Whittaker and Margaret Faye, Eugene Meltsner and Katrina Shanks, or Jack Allen and Joanne Woodston?

Plot

Jack and Joanne had been commuting between Odyssey and Chicago all summer, and in July, Jack began thinking about starting his own business in Odyssey. Jack shows the Antique Emporium, which he is thinking of buying, to Joanne, then takes her out to dinner and asks her to marry him. Joanne agrees, but she is planning a two-month mission trip to the Philippines, so they will have to marry right away.

Eugene receives an award from the college when he helps Fred Holstein by creating a computer program to help with inventory. At the reception, he is shocked to see Katrina, who is working at the bookshop and as a nanny for Hans Holstein, Mr. Holstein's grandson, for the summer. He is flustered because he is unsure how he should relate to her. A romantic afternoon at Trickle Lake is broken when Katrina gets hit in the mouth with a football thrown by Hans. Eugene takes loving care of her after she gets four stitches in her mouth, prompting her to ask him to marry her!

This plot section is too short and should be expanded. »

Notes

VERSION DIFFERENCE: [view] The album version added a number of conversations and scenes to this show, including the following:

  • Bernard and Jack talk about antiques in the antique shop (such as a Hitchcock rocker) before Mr. Gumley comes in. Hitchcock rockers are referenced by Joanne later in #532: “Pink Is Not My Color”.
  • Holstein gives a longer list of the types of books at his shop.
  • There are more lines at the drive-thru concerning Jason's confusion about the Maxi Deluxe.
  • There is a scene with the dentist as Katrina is getting stitches and Connie explains the broken tooth to Jason.
  • There is a scene Jason pays for the meal.
Trivia
Allusions
  • The title for these episodes comes from the line "for whom the bell tolls" from John Donne's 1624 work Devotions upon Emergent Occasions. This line would in turn lend its name to the title of a novel by Ernest Hemingway.

Fred Holstein: Anyone can make sausages.
Connie Kendall: Not like this they can't.

Quentin's Quik Burger Employee: Did you say you wanted that Maxi-Deluxe without onions?
Jason Whittaker: No-no-no — pickles, no pickles.
Quentin's Quik Burger Employee: Oh. Ok, thanks.
Jason Whittaker: Look, just forget it, I'll take the whole thing ju-... I'll be married by the time they fix that burger!

Jason Whittaker: Connie, you're driving me crazy.
Connie Kendall: Thank you.

Thaddeus Gumley: (At the antique shop) Would you gentlemen like some espresso or cappuccino?
Bernard Walton: Well, maybe. Is it new or antique?

Eugene Meltsner: I don't have any other friends! I mean not like her. I mean I have you and Connie. But I admire you, and all I ever do is argue with Connie!
Connie Kendall: That's not true.

Jason Whittaker: I don't believe it.
Connie Kendall: Why not?
Jason Whittaker: They put everything on this maxi-deluxe burger except the burger!

Eugene Meltsner: Spontaneous? How do I plan for that?!

Fred Holstein: Eugene! Come and say hello, while you take ma money!
