The town is Odyssey. It's summer. The weather is hot. Too hot. The kids on the street have a name for this kind of weather. They call it a heatwave. Or so Jack Davis explains in his best detective monologue. He and Oscar Peterson sit on Jack's front porch, bored out of their wits — until they see a mysterious kid walk by with a knapsack and an armload of lumber. Jack and Oscar decide to investigate.

First, they check out the local hardware store and discover that the kid got the lumber there. The owner tells them that the kid, a loner, is building something called "Wonderworld."

Next, Jack and Oscar go to Whit's End and learn from Robyn Jacobs that the kid comes in frequently to check out books from the library. They look at the checkout sheet for his name, but the only thing written down is "D. D."

The next day, Jack and Oscar follow the kid into the forest where they discover the truth! "D. D." is Digger Digwillow, and "Wonderworld" is the tree house he is building. Digger tells them that Whit is helping him develop his imagination properly so that he won't use it to get into trouble. Jack and Oscar think this sounds like a good idea, and they all head up to the tree house to play.

Quotes

Jack Davis: Elementary, Mr. Watson. <buzzer sounds> AAhh! What was that, a security alarm?
Mr. Watson: Nope, was my bad joke buzzer. They're on special for $9.95.
Oscar Peterson: Boy, hardware stores carry everything these days.

Oscar Peterson: Oh! Look at my walkie talkie! How am I gonna explain this to my dad? "Well, dad, it's like this: I fell into a moat."

Jack Davis: <voiceover> I greeted her the way all great detectives greet women. <to Robyn> Hiyah, doll face. What's the latest news?
Robyn Jacobs: The report of your damaged body if you don't call me by my real name.

Oscar Peterson: 10-4!
Jack Davis: Nah, it's twenty after! <buzzer sounds>

Jack Davis: It is summer. The weather is hot: too hot. My dad explains it as a condition when a weather front stalls because there isn't enough arctic current to push it on. My dad talks like that sometimes. Watches too much TV.

Oscar Peterson: But what are we gonna do? We don't know who he is, where he's from, what he's doing, or how to find him.
Jack Davis: Ha! Minor details.

Jack Davis: <voiceover> We tried to act casual so Mr. Watson wouldn't know what we were up to.
Mr. Watson: All right you two, if you're gonna act casual, do it somewhere else. This is a store, not a waiting room.

Jack Davis: <voiceover> This case could be bigger than I thought. It was time to come up with a cunning plan.
Oscar Peterson: <over the walkie talkie> What did you say?
Jack Davis: Nothing. I was just narrating.
