It Ended with a Handshake

“It Ended with a Handshake” is episode #267 of the Adventures in Odyssey audio series. It was written and directed by Paul McCusker, and originally aired on May 7, 1994.

Summary

Eugene's relationship with Katrina takes an unexpected turn when his computer disk filled with unsent love letters goes missing.

Plot

It’s a few moments after Katrina Shanks has become a Christian. Connie is excited about this, but Eugene is confused. He is in the kitchen, typing on his laptop, pouring out his heart to his journal. Not only are Eugene’s feelings for Katrina unclear, he also is uncertain of how Katrina feels about him now that she has become a Christian. He decides they need to be friends, nothing more.

Eugene leaves to help Bernard with his new computer. As he goes out the back, Fred Holstein walks inside. He’s the owner of Holstein's Books and is looking for Katrina to offer her a job! Katrina is ecstatic. Immediately, she leaves to check out Fred’s store.

Meanwhile, Eugene is so agitated that he can’t concentrate on Bernard’s computer. Not only that, but he is late for class. He leaves his laptop with Bernard and runs off to school. A short while later, Bernard rushes into Whit’s End, looking for Eugene. Bernard can’t figure out the laptop. Whenever he turns it on, the screen tells him he has a disk error. Connie discovers that there is a disk in the “A” drive that is preventing the computer from booting up, a disk titled “Katrina, etc.” Connie is dying to look at the contents of the disk, but she restrains herself. She merely tells Bernard to keep the disk with the computer. Bernard goes up to Whit’s office to work.

Later, Katrina comes back in, excited about her new job. She bursts into Whit's office to thank him. There, she finds Bernard hard at work. After they briefly introduce themselves, Bernard hands Katrina the disk with her name on it, the disk filled with Eugene’s journal, private thoughts, and undelivered love letters to her!

Eugene discovers that Katrina has the disk and is beside himself. He races to Katrina’s room to tell her not to take anything she read seriously. Katrina agrees to this, and they shake on it. But then Katrina reveals that she didn’t read anything on Eugene’s disk. Eugene leaves, embarrassed. He realizes that he may have blown a potentially great relationship. It’s a bittersweet day, Eugene is humiliated, yet Katrina has discovered that Eugene’s feelings for her go deep.

Discussion Questions

  1. Why was Eugene so (rightly) convinced that once Katrina became a Christian, things would change between them?
  2. Why did Eugene decide to stop talking to Katrina?
    • What do you think about the way Eugene handled the situation?
      • Katrina?
  3. What does it mean to respect someone’s privacy?

Notes

Trivia
Goofs
  • In a somewhat minor goof, Connie seems to know stuff about computers in this episode (what the "A" drive is, a floppy disk, and apparently how to use it as well as decode error messages). However, in later episodes, it is said many times she knows nothing about computers. In the writer's defense, Connie does call it a 'disk thingy ', and the computer might have shown the disk drive name.

Quotes

Connie Kendall: "Non-system disk or disk error. Replace and strike any key when ready."
Bernard Walton: See? Replace what? Strike what? I was ready to strike the computer and replace it with an abacus.

Bernard Walton: Eugene, Connie...they're getting stranger all the time. Must be something in the water.

Bernard Walton: There. That's not bad. I don't know why people complain about computers so much. It's a breeze.

Eugene Meltsner: Oh, no! I left Katrina in my laptop!

Connie Kendall: Would I snoop around in something that wasn't mine?
Eugene Meltsner: In a heartbeat.

Eugene Meltsner: What?! You eat while you're working on your computer? Don't you realize the damage you could do with a careless crumb or a spilled drink?
Bernard Walton: It's a computer, not the Ming Vase Collection. What good is the thing if it's not a sturdy working machine? I mean, you said when we bought it that it was a wonderful tool.
Eugene Meltsner: A tool, yes, but not a sledgehammer or a—or a TV tray! You have to treat a computer with care and kindness. They're delicate creatures who must be maintained with respect!

Connie Kendall: It was a mix-up, and "she" took it.
Eugene Meltsner: "She"? What "she," my chest constricts to ask!?
Connie Kendall: Well, she thought it might be for her!
Eugene Meltsner: Which "she," Miss Kendall?? And why would she think it was for her?!
Connie Kendall: BECAUSE HER NAME WAS ON IT!!
Eugene Meltsner: <whimpers> That she...
Connie Kendall: Eugene, your eye is twitching.
Eugene Meltsner: Is it?

Connie Kendall: Well, Katrina saw her name on the disk, so she... uh... took it home with her.
Eugene Meltsner: She took my disk. The disk with my journals, and poems, and undelivered <gulps> letters, to the last person I ever wanted to see them!
Connie Kendall: Yeah... I’m sorry, Eugene.
Eugene Meltsner: <calmly> Oh, it’s quite alright. If you’ll excuse me, I should go to Katrina’s dorm room and... explain.
Connie Kendall: Yeah, I guess you should....
Eugene Meltsner: ...Good night. <exits and closes door>
Connie Kendall: <sighs> He took that better than I thought.
Eugene Meltsner: WAAAHAHAAHAAAHAAHAHAAHAHHAHAAA!!!!!!!!!!
