“Square One” is episode #674 of the Adventures in Odyssey audio series. It was written by Marshal Younger and Paul McCusker, and originally aired on November 20, 2010.

Summary

Matthew joins a mysterious new club and refuses to tell Emily about their activities. Emily decides that this is a mystery that she must solve.

Plot

Emily Jones is bored, and complains to Matthew Parker because the Jones and Parker Detective Agency has had no mystery. Matthew joins a club called Square One because he's excited about a pinball machine. Ryan Cummings is the leader of the club. However, Emily is nosey about this club, and blackmails Matthew about revealing his crush on Lorraine Danderfield. Then, Emily sneaks into the club, but she's found out, and Matthew is kicked out for a week. Emily tries to get Matthew back into the club, but every plan fails, including one where Emily blackmails the club with photos. Finally, the Square One Club decides to let Matthew back.

Notes

Trivia
Allusions
  • The club's headquarters at Jay's uncle's junkyard may have been inspired by the Three Investigators' headquarters hidden in a scrapyard run by a main character's uncle.
  • Emily's ideas for how Matthew should try to get back in the club are heavily inspired by the five love languages: gifts, quality time, words of affirmation, acts of service, and physical touch. Emily suggests four methods to Matthew: compliments (words of affirmation), gifts, acts of service, and a passionate appeal; her fifth method is blackmail.
