The Old Judge was identified the Unseen One's call on the lives of both Lawrence (many years before) and Darien — the call to be king. After rescuing Anna from being sold as a slave, the Old Judge taught her from his wisdom then sent her to Sister Leona. He harbored Darien and Kyle for a time. He died peacefully in his sleep, shortly after Darien's victory in Kellen.
He was an old man. Slender, pale face with wild, white hair and a thin beard and mustache. He wore a long black overcoat that seamed to droop from his skeletal body. Underneath the overcoat, he wore a collarless shirt, waistcoat, and old-fashioned breeches, stockings and shoes – like the people who had lived during the American Revolution. His costume was an odd contrast to the way everyone else in Marus was dressed.
Teacher of Anna, Prophet to King Lawrence and Darien.
The prophet and last of the judges, Samuel. The Old Judge’s name in Darien’s Rise was eventually revealed to be the same of that of his Biblical parallel, Samuel.
|“||Titus (b): I take my orders from the King and his officers! You can't tell me what to do! You have no authority.
Old Judge: Don't I?
Titus (b): Well...No!
Old Judge: Let me tell you a little something about authority. It is given. Not taken. My authority comes from the Unseen One. From where does the king and his officers get their authority?
Titus (b): Well...uh...
|“||Old Judge: The Unseen One is the creator and sustainer of all things; he is everywhere at all times: all-seeing, all-knowing, all powerful.
Anna: Like God.
Old Judge: No, not like God; the Unseen One is God.
|“||Old Judge: We're in the hands of the Unseen One [God].
|“||Darien: He [Prince George] is my friend. I want him to know that these allegations are all lies.
Old Judge: If he's your friend, then he knows it all ready.
|“||Old Judge: ...often it's in suffering that we see the ancient ways of the Unseen One [God] most clearly.
|“||Old Judge: The wheels are in motion, my son — nothing can be the way it was.
