“Out to Sea,” an Adventures in Odyssey Club exclusive, is episode #849 of the Adventures in Odyssey audio series. It was written by Bob Smithouser and Phil Lollar, and was originally released on December 1, 2018.

Summary

During a visit to the Florida Keys, an ocean getaway lands Whit, Eugene, and Wooton in a boatload of trouble.

Plot

Mr. Whittaker, Eugene and Wooton are visiting the Florida Keys, eager to go deep sea fishing following a conference where Whit demonstrated his new portable Imagination Station. Wooton has his scuba gear. Eugene wants to try out his home-made electronic fish-finder. When the trio locates the boat Wooton chartered, it's a creaky old rust-bucket that may or may not be seaworthy. But with no other options, they decide to proceed with their plans, trusting their safety to a blustery old sea dog named Captain Quid. Before long, a series of mishaps, a shark sighting, and a brewing storm place the group in peril. Ultimately, Eugene learns that God is with us, even if our journey doesn't go exactly as planned.

  1. Have you ever taken an unforgettable boat ride? If so, what made that voyage so memorable?
  2. If you'd been aboard the Penny's Worth, would you rather have: a) fished with Whit, b) helped Eugene test the fish finder, c) gone scuba diving with Wooton, or d) driven the boat with Captain Quid? Why? Which would have been your least favorite thing to do?
  3. In hindsight, what do you think our Odyssey friends should have done differently before heading out to sea with Captain Quid?
  4. This episode took a very unexpected turn. How did you feel when it seemed for a moment that all was lost? Talk about the promises found in Isaiah 59:1, John 14:27, Psalms 23:4 and 46:1.
  5. Eugene compared himself to Jonah in the Bible. If a friend asked you to share that Old Testament prophet's true fish story, how would you tell it?

  9. In the Bible, Jesus used choppy seas to remind His disciples to have more faith. Two dramatic boat trips (Matthew 8:23-27 and 14:22-33) reveal how Peter went from watching Jesus perform a miracle, to wanting to be an active part of one. Read those Scriptures together. What can we learn from Peter's example?

  • This is Bob Smithouser's writing debut.
  • This episode marks the return of Captain Quid, who hadn't appeared since #258: “Aloha, Oy!, Part 3”, 25 years earlier.
  • The episode doubles as an homage to the summer blockbusters of Steven Spielberg. Older listeners may pick up subtle nods to Jaws, Indiana Jones, Jurassic Park and E.T. The Extra-Terrestial.
  • Captain Quid says: "But you signed up for a three hour tour! A three hour tour!" This and the small tune that accompanies it in the music are a reference to the 1960s sitcom, Gilligan's Island, in which the theme song contains the line, "Five passengers set sail that day for a three hour tour! A three hour tour!" The similarities continue as the characters both in the show and on the AIO episode are subsequently caught in a storm and (in AIO's case, nearly) shipwrecked.
  • The Club video accompanying this episode opens with Bob describing a scene from Finding Nemo to some local birds.
