You Win Some, You Lose Some

“You Win Some, You Lose Some” is episode #432 of the Adventures in Odyssey audio series. It was written by Marshal Younger, and originally aired on November 27, 1999.

Summary

Two mean-spirited girls make life miserable for Wendy Zannuck and cause a discouraged Connie to quit her job at the Timothy Center.

Plot

Connie visits Tom Riley's office to express frustration about her recent experience as camp counselor at a middle school girls' camp. She wants to quit because she has forgotten girls can be so mean.

At camp, there is a girl named Wendy Zannuck who, though nice, is not very social and not dressed very well. Liz Horton complains about her and Wendy doesn't want to be there. Trying to encourage Wendy, Connie encourages her to make some brownies. The plan seems to work well at first, but that evening, after the girls have had Wendy's brownies, they are all sick. Wendy is very discouraged, but Connie urges her to try again. This time, Wendy accidentally puts far too much salt in the cookies and they turn out terribly.

Later that week, Heather tells Connie of the terrible stunts she pulled that week. Connie thinks that trying to impress Liz may be the cause of these problems and she encourages Heather to talk to Liz. Later, Liz vents similar feelings to Connie and, trying to be a wise counselor, Connie gives Liz the same advice-talk to Heather.

That evening, the girls begin to apologize and confess to each other and all seems to be going well until Connie realizes the girls are just making it all up. The entire thing was a prank. To top off the week, on Saturday the girls had a food fight while Connie was checking on the buses. Connie feels incredibly discouraged after the week. She is surprised, however, when Tom tells her that Wendy had watched to see how she responded to the food fight, and when Connie took it in stride, Wendy noticed Connie kept her cool and cleaned up the mess. Wendy's mom had just sent Tom a note thanking her for Connie's influence on her daughter. Tom says "you win some and you lose some...sometimes you win without knowing it." Connie agrees to stay and continue to work at the Center.

Discussion Questions

  1. What was the joke that Liz and Heather played on Connie?
  2. Why did Connie feel so discouraged at the end of the week of camp?
  3. Tom said, "You win some, you lose some, and sometimes you win without ever knowing it." What do you think he meant by that?

Notes

VERSION DIFFERENCE: [view] This episode originally had an AIO short in the middle of it entitled "Biography Minute: Pocahontas." It is currently unavailable in any format from Focus on the Family. This episode now airs with Fairy Tale Action News - Humpty Dumpty instead.

Trivia
  • Even though she had a major role in the show, Katie Leigh was unable to attend the recording session of this episode due to illness. So rather than delay taping the show until the next session, it was decided to have the other actors record their lines, with writer Kathy Buchanan temporarily standing in for Katie so the other actors could play off of her lines. Weeks later, Katie recorded her lines separately and they were then carefully edited in to the already completed tracks of the other actors. So even though it sounds like Connie and all the characters are all together at the Timothy Center, they were actually never in the same room. The wonders of modern technology (and good acting!).
  • Connie mentions to Tom that she went to camp when she was in middle school; one story about this would be told later in #583: “The Champ of the Camp”.
  • This episode marks Heather Acuff's final appearance to date.
Audio
  • Listen carefully: Wendy's sniffles in her first scene are sound effects, apparently added during post-production. The actress playing Wendy was clearly not cry-acting during the scene.
  • The girls from Connie's cabin can be heard singing "Home on the Range" while walking out of the cabin before Connie confronts Liz in this episode.

Reviews

Quotes

Liz Horton: The only thing we all ate was Wendy's death brownies!

Heather: I gave Clutzy Carl your phone number and told him you wanted to go mountain climbing with him!
Liz Horton: You remember when your dad was running for city council? I'm the one that told the press that he sometimes has delusions of being Harry Truman!
Heather: You know that awful country song on the radio, "I'm at the Self Serve Island at the Gas Station of Life?" I wrote that!
Liz Horton: You know how they never found out who fired the first shot of the Revolutionary War?

Liz Horton: I'm not going on another nature hike. I'm sick of nature! I want to be unnatural for a while. I just wanna go home to my aluminum siding house, watch TV, and eat processed foods all day.
