“First Love” is episode #111 of the Adventures in Odyssey audio series. It was written and directed by Paul McCusker, and originally aired on April 21, 1990.

Summary

Connie falls in love for the first time with a guy named Jeff Lewis, who turns out to be a non-Christian.

Plot

Connie goes to a baseball game with her friend Cheryl McCormick. Afterward, Connie meets one of the team's star players, Jeff Lewis. The two of them hit it off famously and begin seeing more and more of each other. Soon, Connie has fallen in love.

Jeff is not a Christian, though. At first, Connie falls into the trap of believing that she's doing Jeff a favor by staying with him so she can win him to the Lord. Before long, she begins skipping Bible studies, then church services, just so she can be with Jeff. And he is no closer to Jesus than when they first met.

At last, Cheryl, and then Whit, confronts Connie with the danger of her actions. Connie realizes she must break off her relationship with Jeff. She goes through with the painful task and matures even more in her walk with Jesus.

Discussion Questions

  1. Why is it wrong for Christians to date non-Christians?
  2. What excuses did Connie give for dating Jeff?
  3. What would you say to a friend who was acting like Connie?
  4. Whit told Connie she was in the middle of a "tug-of-war" between Jeff and God. What did Whit mean by that?

Notes

  • PARENTAL WARNING: This story is about whether it's right or wrong to date a non-Christian. Although handled delicately, the subject matter may be too mature for younger listeners.
Trivia
  • According to Paul McCusker, this episode wasn't written for teens, although it deals with a "teen" issue. The concept behind this and other episodes "for teens" was to give the target audience "prescriptive" ideas before certain issues (like dating, in this case) became problems.
  • Steve Burns, the actor who plays Cheryl McCormick's boyfriend in this episode later would later play Robert Mitchell, Connie's boyfriend.
  • Listen carefully: the music playing at Jeff's house during the party is the same music heard during the basketball game in #48: “Heroes”.
