Scripture

Luke 10:38-42

38As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him.

39She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet listening to what he said. 40But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, "Lord, don't you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!" 41"Martha, Martha," the Lord answered, "you are worried and upset about many things,

42but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her."

All for the Guest

“All for the Guest,” an Adventures in Odyssey Club exclusive, is episode #868 of the Adventures in Odyssey audio series. It was written and directed by Kathy Buchanan, and was originally released on July 1, 2019.

Summary

It's a stressful sleepover when Penny's parents and Wooton's childhood butler come to visit on the same weekend.

Plot

This plot section is too short and should be expanded. »

Discussion Questions

  1. Wooton enjoyed collecting Ozzie the Otter coins from his Choco-Puffs cereal. What's the best prize you've ever found inside a cereal box?
  2. Do you find it easy or difficult to show hospitality to others? Who do you enjoy having over to your house? What's your favorite thing to do with guests?
  3. Discuss Hebrews 13:2 and Luke 14:12-14. How is showing hospitality to strangers different from entertaining people you already know?
  4. Penny and Wooton did their best to make their guests feel welcome, yet still ran into problems. Describe the couple's attitude when things didn't go as planned. What can we learn from their example?
  5. Can you name three ways characters in this episode served or looked out for one another?
  6. Read Ephesians 4:29 and Psalm 141:3. Whose careless words hurt someone's feelings? When have you said something you wished you could take back?
  7. Like Frank, we all make mistakes. But often it's what we do next that matters most. What did Frank do to make the situation better? What might he have said or done to make it worse?
  8. There was no excuse for Frank's crusty attitude, but there was an explanation for it. Why is it important to understand another person's story?
  9. Everyone likes to feel needed, just like Frank and Bradford. Talk about the talents and passions God has given you, and how you've used them to make a difference (even a small one) in someone's life. How can you practice 1 Peter 4:10 today?
  10. Bradford had been so faithful that Wooton wanted to make him feel special during his visit. What can you do to show someone right in your own home how much you appreciate all they've done for you?
