The Highest Stakes, Part 2

“The Highest Stakes, Part 2” is episode #629 of the Adventures in Odyssey audio series. It was written by Marshal Younger and Nathan Hoobler, and originally aired on December 8, 2007.

Summary

Grady’s father, Carson McKay, returns to Odyssey after a long absence. The whole family must decide whether or not to trust him.

Plot

While on a tour of Wooton Bassett's house Grady McKay shows Carson the secret PowerBoy room hidden behind the bookcase, and tells him how much all the drawings and posters are worth.

Carson, needing money to pay off all his old gambling debts, asks Grady if any of the money that he gave his mother is left, when he finds out it's gone he decides to steal the original drawing of PowerBoy. When Grady finds out what his father has done, he goes and asks him to give it back to Wooton. When his father says he won't, they argue and Grady runs away.

When Grady goes to Wooton to explain who had stolen the drawing, he expects Wooton to be upset and not want to be his friend anymore, but is surprised when Wooton forgives him. The two of them end up talking about Christianity, and Grady decides to become a Christian.

Later that night, Carson is trying to sell the PowerBoy drawing and his buyer turns out to be Whit. Whit, instead of buying the drawing, gives Carson a list of things that he wants Carson to do, including giving the drawing back, getting help for his addiction and fixing cars at the church. In return, Whit will pay off his debt. The two of them decide to meet again at Carson's hotel room the next morning to meet Wilson.

Meanwhile Grady is talking to his mom about how he has already forgiven his father for what he has done and explains that he has become a Christian.

The next morning when Whit goes to see Carson, he finds that he has already left and finds a note and the PowerBoy drawing. Whit brings the note to the McKay family. They read it and decide that maybe Carson really did want to change, and Kristi phone him as he is at the bus depot ready to leave town and tell him that if he wants to come back, he can because they've forgiven him.

The episode ends with Carson deciding to buy a bus ticket back to Odyssey.

Discussion Questions

  1. Why didn't Kristi trust Carson?
  2. Why did Carson steal Wooton's drawing?
  3. Why did Grady feel that his dad really had changed?

Trivia
Goofs
  • In part one of this episode, Carson McKay says that he is staying "at the Odyssey Motel." In this episode he states that he is staying at "The Connellsville Inn." However, this may simply suggest that Carson switched locations to be cautious, especially since he told Whit that he was staying at the Connellsville Inn under another name. More curious is the fact that Carson paid for a bus ticket to Odyssey at the end of the episode when it was established in Part 1 that he owned a truck. If he abandoned or sold the truck it was never mentioned.

Reviews

Quotes

Carson McKay: How far away from here can I get on a hundred bucks?

Wooton Bassett: No one has ever beaten my record of thirty-one slides in fifteen minutes!
Samantha McKay: Really?
Wooton Bassett: Of course, nobody else has sprayed cooking oil on their pants either.

Wooton Bassett: Oh sure, go right ahead. Just be careful in the rec room. I'm not sure if the oatmeal's congealed yet.

Grady McKay: I'd rather be like you.
Wooton Bassett: Oh...an out-of-shape mailman who decorates with leftover garage sale items?

Grady McKay: Okay, so how do we do this? What do we need? Water? Do I have to shave my head or something?
Wooton Bassett: Oh, well, I mean... you can if you want, but it's not required, and praying won't give you razor burn.

Wooton Bassett: You know, this is really cool, Grady; and here I thought finally getting a ten-pronged fork in the mail was gonna be the highlight of my day!
Grady McKay: So... this is better, huh?
Wooton Bassett: Yeah. This is the best, Grady.

Carson McKay: I can't expect them to forgive me over and over. It's not fair to them!
John Whittaker: No, no, it's not fair, but neither is abandoning them.
Carson McKay: It's the lesser of two evils.
John Whittaker: Now you're making excuses. Your mistakes don't let you off the hook from your responsibility as a father. The problem is that you think you can fix your mistakes on your own, and you can't, Carson. God is the only one who can fix what's wrong with you.

Carson McKay: My family's never gonna take me back!
John Whittaker: Give them a chance! This is your family, Carson. Do what's right.

Kristi McKay: You know what? I take that back. People do change. I've seen you do it. You used to be such a handful every day, rebellious and angry...and look at you. You've turned into this sweet little man. I wish your dad could do whatever you've been doing.
Grady McKay: I was just listening to people like Mr. Whittaker and Wooton. They told me about God.
Kristi McKay: God? You mean you think going to church has changed you?
Grady McKay: Yeah, sort of. I guess it helped to start some changes.

Carson McKay: You'll forgive my saying so, Mr. Whittaker, but God's never shown much interest in what I'm going through. He doesn't know me.
John Whittaker: On the contrary: the problem is that you don't know Him.
