Matthew 6:9-15

9"This, then, is how you should pray: "'Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name,

10your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. 11Give us today our daily bread. 12Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. 13And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.' 14For if you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.

15But if you do not forgive men their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.

Summary

Wyatt takes it upon himself to start fixing things around the house – including a washing machine. Meanwhile, David decides that it’s time to take Matthew on a camping trip to teach him to be a man.

Plot

The Perkins family is getting ready for a special event. They are video-chatting Mr. Perkins on his birthday! Wearing their best clothes, Bridget, Wyatt, and Mrs. Perkins present him with a celebratory cake. "Do you think my breath can travel seven-thousand miles?" Mr. Perkin askes. After 'blowing' out the candles on his cake, he reveals the colonel only gave him a minute for the call and he has to go. Mrs. Perkins mentions that she needed Mr. Perkins's help with the pilot light but he says that Wyatt is her man and that he can figure it out.

The next day, Matthew Parker sees Wyatt on the Parker computer. Wyatt is researching how to fix a broken washing machine. The Perkins's is broken. Wyatt tells Matthew that he fixes things around his home all of the time. Later, Matthew comes into the Parker kitchen. Eva Parker remarks that Nana cut his bangs crooked. When Mrs. Parker is looking through the mail, Matthew offers to forge his dad's signature for it. When Mrs. Parker declines, Matthew leaves, upset.

David Parker is under the hood of his car, fixing his fuel pump. Matthew asks if he can help, but his dad insists he should do it. David invites Matthew to turn the car on when he finished, but Matthew declines. Disheartened, he goes back inside.

At the Perkins house, Mrs. Perkins slips on the water which is leaking from the washing machine. "Aw man, I thought I fixed that!" Wyatt exclaims. Bridget and Wyatt help clean the mess. Mrs. Perkins tells Wyatt that next time something breaks, he should tell her.

Back at the Parker residence, David tells Eva he thinks Matthew wants to "become a man". He plans to take Matthew camping and teaching him manly things. When Matthew tells Wyatt he is packing for a camping trip that his father calls A Rite of Passage Trip, Matthew's journey to becoming a man. Excitedly, Wyatt asks if he can come along. Offscreen, Wyatt gets permission to come along.

Sometime later, at the campgrounds, Wyatt and Matthew prepare the tent and gather wood while he reads from 1 Corinthians. "Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong. Let all that you do be done in love." David says that when he was younger, he did the manhood challenge and he never forgot the lessons. He warns things might get difficult. During the trip, Matthew and Wyatt study the verse from 1 Corinthians while gathering lifting insect-infested logs and collecting rocks in their backpacks.

It is nighttime. Wyatt is asleep and snoring while Matthew and his dad are awake. David remarks that Matthew seems less-interested than Wyatt in the object lessons. Matthew responds that is was not what he was expecting. He thought he was just going to have fun with his dad. "I mean, stuff about being a man is really helpful but... I don't know. It's not something I'm thinking about just yet. I'm not done being a kid." When Matthew wanted to help with the car and filling out the water bill, he wanted to know that his parents trusted him like Wyatt's parents' trust Wyatt with fixing things. David and Matthew agree that they both not ready for Matthew to become an adult just yet. They decide upon playing a game of I Spy.

At one in the morning, David finds Wyatt rubbing sticks together, trying to start a fire. David reminds him that they have matches, but Wyatt says he wanted to start the fire as a man would. David notices Wyatt's hands are bleeding and tells him to stop. David says he'll get the matches but Wyatt refuses. His dad could do it, so he should be able to, too.

At the Perkins house, Mrs. Perkins needs to video-chat with Mr. Perkins. David called her, telling her that Wyatt was acting strangely. Mr. Perkins does not respond to the call. Mrs. Perkins notices there is a new recording of a call from two days ago of Wyatt and his dad. During the call, Mr. Perkins encourages Wyatt to be 'the man of the house'. Realizing what is going on, Mrs. Perkins tries Mr. Perkins again.

Later, Wyatt and his dad talk. His dad tells him he does not want him to become the adult of the house, but to help his mom when she asks for it. "You'll be an adult for the rest of your life." Wyatt says he never thought of that. "Yikes!" he says.

During the final scene, Matthew and his dad are building an adjustable putting green together. Wyatt joins them. David jokes that they will use Matthew's crooked bangs for help. "I mean, if you were a girl, we would call you Eileen."
