The Power

And the Glory

“The Power” is episode #239 of the Adventures in Odyssey audio series. It was written by Marshal Younger and Paul McCusker, and originally aired on July 17, 1993.

Summary

Isaac Morton finds himself at the mercy of a techno-bully who has the ability to change grades and alter school records.

Plot

Sam Johnson and Isaac Morton are suspicious. Everyone is getting bad test grades in Mr. Gardener's math class except Nicky and Rusty Gordon. Nicky's good grades are understandable — he's a child genius. But Rusty is a member of the Bones of Rath, a group that foams at the mouth if they even hear the word "study."

Something obviously isn't right. Sam and Isaac are determined to find out the problem. Their search for truth causes them to tickle information out of Charles Thompson, who also uncharacteristically got a good grade on a pop quiz. Under pressure, Charles tells them that Nicky has access to the school's computer files. Isaac goes to the principal, but Nicky finds out about it before Isaac can get there. Nicky gets back at Isaac by making him look ridiculous.

Nicky seems unstoppable. With his computer skills, he can make or break anyone. But just as he gets ready to take care of Isaac once and for all, a freak storm causes a power outage, ruining his computer. Nicky's power is gone, he is caught by the school, and Sam and Isaac learn about the source of true power.

Trivia

• When Nicholas Adamsworth first appeared in #76: “Eugene's Dilemma”, he was a good guy. Unfortunately, by the time of this episode, Nicholas's character turned a bit shady.
• In this episode, Nicholas seems to be using some of the skills he learned from Richard Maxwell in #76: “Eugene's Dilemma”.
• Isaac Morton quotes It's a Wonderful Life at the end of this episode: "That's just what I get for praying."
• Principal Skinner refers to the events of #148: “Isaac the Procrastinator” in this episode.
• This is Isaac Morton's last episode to date — likely because Justin Morgan's voice was changing.

Goofs

This episode is full of goofs, which are slightly excusable since this is one of Marshal Younger's first episodes.

• Nicholas is now in middle school, even though he was in college when we first met him.

• It's possible that either Nicholas or his parent(s) decided that he should go to middle school instead of college in order to meet kids his age, since in his first appearance he's only 11.

• Rusty mentions Nicholas's mother, though Nicholas is an orphan.
  • This can be shakily explained if Nicholas has been adopted.
• Nicholas has a notebook of all the people who have insulted him since he was "a little tyke." However, if he was moved around due to being an orphan, they wouldn't all still be in Odyssey.
