History

Mary Hooper is a woman who lives in the Odyssey retirement home. She was initially extremely hostile towards Donna Barclay when she first came to visit. However, Whit encouraged her to keep visiting Mary and the two came to be close. Donna even told Mary that she knew what it felt like to lose someone, and when Mary asked her how she knew, Donna told her about her friend Karen. Mary realized Donna was right, and tells Donna how sorry she is for her loss, which Donna accepts.

It was later revealed that, in order to cover her grief over the death of her husband, Mary became bitter towards everyone around her. On her birthday, she tried to build up her wall against Donna, but Donna refused to leave and instead brought her a birthday gift: her daughter, Barbara Mansfield. With that, the wall dissolves, and Mary finally cries tears of regret and pain, while telling Barbara to keep on trying when it came to taking care of her. The two women hug, and Donna wishes Mary a happy birthday, having learned that just because someone acts a certain way on the outside, it doesn't mean they're that way on the inside as well.
