Whit's Departure and Return was used to explain the absence of the character of Whit from the show after the death of actor Hal Smith. Whit left Odyssey for the Middle East while listeners were following Eugene and Bernard, then on a road trip across the country. Leaving to conduct missions work, Whit was gone for approximately two years, and returned later when the actor Paul Herlinger joined the show. When Whit arrived back in Odyssey, considering a position to return to Israel, Whit decided to turn the offer down and stay in Odyssey.
