Personality
Shirley Zigler is highly sensitive and insecure. She first appeared to be constantly scared by Jake's pet mouse Luthor in Nothing to Fear, which she dropped and let go into the cracks at Whit’s End. Jake pulled a prank on her and took her down into the basement in Whit’s End. However, it backfired, as he injured himself by tripping over his own booby trap, and needed Shirley to save him; she eventually got over her fear after recalling Whit’s advice to remember that most fears are usually inside our heads, and recalling 1 John 4:4: "Greater is He who is in you, than he who is in the world." Whit later came down and found her and Jake in the basement after returning from a meeting.
Later, Whit gave Shirley a double scoop of Chocolate Ripple; he added that Mayor Perkins got called away on business, so the meeting was canceled. Shirley admitted that even if Whit hadn’t come down, she would’ve found her own way out of the basement eventually. Whit agreed, and said he was proud of her, as it took a lot of courage for Shirley to do what she did, although he still wasn’t sure how she got paint all over her. Shirley said she didn’t know either, as it was so dark down there.
She asked how Jake was, and Whit replied that the doctor thought Jake had torn a ligament, and he’d be off his feet for a while, but he’d mend eventually; however, Whit added, he didn’t think Jake was going anywhere, as his father said something about grounding Jake until he was twenty-five for his prank on Shirley (much to Whit’s amusement).
