Mr. Umphrees appeared in the episode #186: “The Conscientious Cross-Guard”. He was a janitor who worked at Odyssey Middle School during Bernard Walton’s time as a student there.
According to Mr. Umphrees, when he was young, he faced a situation similar to the one Bernard faced as a crossing guard in middle school. However, Mr. Umphrees ran away, and someone got hurt. Many years later, Mr. Umphrees became a janitor at Odyssey Middle School. Helping Bernard was his chance to redeem himself — to make up for what he didn’t do before.
Mr. Umphrees saw Bernard standing up to Tanyer Hyde and his gang, even as they were picking on him; when Bernard was pushed into the path of an oncoming car, Mr. Umphrees appeared and pushed him out of the way, but didn’t have time to save himself and got hit by the car as a result (much to the shock of Tanyer and his gang). Luckily, Mr. Umphrees ended up being all right. When Bernard visited him at the hospital, Mr. Umphrees said he was amazed that Bernard stuck it out. Bernard replied that he had started thinking about what Mr. Umphrees had said — “Turn to a higher power for strength” — so he prayed to God. Mr. Umphrees replied that he was talking about the vice principal; when Bernard looked puzzled, Mr. Umphrees chuckled and said he was kidding, and that the Lord always helps when someone calls on Him.
