Fear Chemist
Fear Chemist, or Frederick Olben, is a comic book character created by Wooton Bassett. He is a founding member of the Legion of Bad Guys and Hana's archenemy.
History
Troubled by nightmares, chemist Frederick Olben did groundbreaking research and discovered how to create the chemical that produces fear, and converted the Metropolitanville Chemical Co. into a manufacturing center for his frightful concoctions.
His crime career kicked off with the release of a hallucinogenic cleaning fluid which disturbed the mayor and other city employees. He was briefly jailed after a confrontation with Captain Absolutely, but soon escaped jail, with the rest of the Legion.
He joined Dr. Relative at "It's All Relative", the ultimate lair of distraction, and was spotted in the "Tunnel of Terror" near some young people. He participated in a brief battle with the Captain, but escaped capture by climbing up the wall and going into a secret entrance. For a time, he was the only Legion member left at large.
A little while after this, he kidnapped Hana and placed her in a fear toxin chamber in his secret lab. He then appeared to Captain Absolutely and offered to split control of the city with him. By fear, 'half the city would run to God', and Fear Chemist would leave them alone, in return for the rest. After the Captain refused, Fear Chemist unleashed an overwhelming dose of fear toxin into Hana and let her loose from her confinement to unintentionally wreak havoc on the city. After Hana was subdued and taken to rest in the Metropolitanville Museum, Fear Chemist appeared to take his revenge, but failed and taken back into police custody.
He was let out of jail by an order from a state judge, and took to the skies to convert cumulonimbus clouds into 'fear-us' clouds, but his plot was foiled when Hana broke his machine and spread silver iodide through the clouds, causing a storm.
Sometime later, Fear Chemist appeared at the Fortress of Solid Truth, believing that Captain Absolutely was responsible for the fear receptors in youth shutting down. After the Captain assured him that he was not responsible and wanted to bring fear back, the two collaborated, against Hana's misgivings. This research relationship broke up after Fear Chemist, believing that the cure could be found in Hana's mother's blood, forcibly took a sample.
When Captain Absolutely confronted Dr. Relative in the ruins of the library, Fear Chemist dropped in on a jetpack to explain that the Lirus was the cause of the fear receptors shutting down. Dr. Relative at this moment apparently wiped Fear Chemist's mind, leaving him inert. However, a few minutes later, Hana was able to help persuade him to repent (of his work with the Lirus) by showing him how his devices had left Fear Chemist 'a shell'. Afterwards, Dr. Relative loaded backups of all the information he had taken, including Fear Chemist's, onto every available electronic device on the city. Captain Absolutely and Hana brought Fear Chemist to the former mayor's house and restored his mind by having him double-tap the mayor's phone.
As soon he was restored, Fear Chemist continued his old ways. When Dr. Relative was elected mayor, Fear Chemist, as an 'expert on crime', was placed onto his advisory panel.
Personality
Results-oriented and willing to offer to collaborate with Captain Absolutely when it suits his interests.
He enjoys striking dramatic poses and indulging in villainous laughter.
He claimed that he ‘thinks best when he is scheming’.
He is himself afflicted by fear, breaking through a glass window to escape when Hana merely threatened to combust the fear gas in a room.
Vengeful when thwarted, he was happy to watch Hana destroy large portions of Metropolitanville even though it offered no benefit to him.
Powers and abilities
Fear Chemist is a brilliant chemist, researcher, and inventor, with a superior understanding of the human brain and especially on the receptors and chemicals that create fear. He uses this knowledge to develop fear-inducing hallucinogenics, gasses, and sprays.
He often uses a jetpack to get around, possibly a device of his own invention. He was seen operating another type of flying machine when he attempted to spread ‘fear-us’ clouds over Metropolitanville.
Weaknesses and limitations
Other than his intellect, he is an ordinary human being, with no superpowers or special abilities.
He wears a protective mask when deploying gasses, suggesting that he is vulnerable to his own inventions.
He isn’t necessarily an expert on scientific questions outside of his specific fields of study (for instance, he isn’t a meteorologist).
