History

Saint Valentine was a Roman saint in the 3rd century, in honor of whom Valentine's Day is celebrated. As a Christian priest, he performed many wedding ceremonies until he was arrested and imprisoned upon being caught marrying Christian couples and otherwise aiding Christians who were at the time being persecuted by Claudius in Rome. After attempting to convert the emperor Claudius from within the prison, he was condemned to death and executed. He is recognized as a saint in many Christian traditions.
