History

Horatio G. Spafford was an American lawyer in the mid-19th Century. He was good friends with Philip Bliss and Dwight L. Moody. In 1870 the Spaffords' son died from the Scarlet fever. in 1871, the Chicago Fire destroyed much of Spafford's land investments along the shore.

One year later in 1873 the Spaffords decided to vacation in Europe, planning to meet up with D.L. Moody who was on an evangelism tour. Philip was delayed by business in Chicago so he sent his wife and daughters ahead on a ship, planning to meet up with them a few weeks later. Tragically, the ship carrying his wife and children was wrecked and his family died.

Standing on his ship to Europe, in the exact spot his family perished, he penned the words to "It Is Well With My Soul"
