Hebrews 4:14-16

14Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has gone through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess.

15For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are--yet was without sin.

16Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.

Discussion Questions

  1. We learned several new words during Matthew's Imagination Station journey, including "lollard." Who were the lollards, and what did they believe?
  2. Talk about Sir John's plot to get King Henry's attention by kidnapping him. Can you think of a better strategy than breaking the law, even if it was for a noble cause? Why is the belief that "the ends justify the means" a recipe for moral chaos? (For a hint, see Judges 17:6 and 21:25)
  3. Put yourself in the shoes of the religious leaders of Oldcastle's day. Were they wrong to worry about Bible translations being accurate? What was their mistake?
  4. Have you ever done something that earned you a "time out"? What happened? What did you learn? How did you feel when Matthew and Sir John were sentenced to a 40-day time out in prison for their beliefs about the Bible?
  5. Why is it important that everyone around the world be able to read and understand the Scriptures? [After discussing this, consider Paul's statement in 2 Timothy 3:16-17]
  6. This episode included debates about grace, works, confession, repentance, forgiveness of sins, and the role of the church. What did you find most interesting? Was anything confusing?
  7. What do you think the writers of Jeremiah 15:16 and Job 23:12 are trying to say in those verses? How hungry are you for God's Word?
  8. As Matthew discovered, it's easy to take the Bible for granted. What are some other precious things people take for granted?
  9. Read Jesus' command in Mark 16:15. What did that mean to the people standing there with Him? How about us? Name several ways Christians can help spread the good news "into all the world" today without leaving home.
