The Impossible

“The Impossible” is episode #589 of the Adventures in Odyssey audio series. It was written by John Fornof, and originally aired on March 11, 2006.

Summary

In a race against an impossible deadline, Whit and his son Jason join Marvin Washington to try to finish a new invention.

Plot

Jason Whittaker is attempting to convince officials in India to use John Whittaker's new invention - the Edu-Link - to educate millions of children throughout India. The minister promises to consider using the Odyssey gang's invention - funded by a missionary organization that also intends to reach Indian children for Christ - if the prototype is functional within three weeks. Faced with an impossible deadline that, if not met will result in another less-than-Christian organization receiving the contract to educate children, Whit, Eugene, and Marvin work around the clock to try to get the Edu-Link ready.

One morning, three days before the deadline, after Whit has worked another all-nighter, Connie forces Whit to go to the doctor. He is told that he is suffering from exhaustion and needs to rest for a few days. This puts the team even further behind and with little hope of success, but Eugene and Marvin decide to continue on and try to meet the deadline.

They remain hopeful until a non-working part arrives. Just as they begin to despair, Jason arrives to help. With his experience in remote broadcasting, they again believe they may make it. With more work, both Edu-Link 1 and Edu-Link 2 are functional, and just in time! As they make a final test, a storm knocks out the power at Whit's End, sending a surge of power through the building and rendering Edulink 2 incapacitated. The gang mail the functional Edu-Link to the Minister of Education and pray that they will be able to fix Edu-Link 2 for the transmission before Jason has to meet with him mere days away.

An exhausted Eugene takes sleeping pills to rest before the presentation, but mistakenly takes too many and is unable to be roused! Meanwhile Jason's flight is delayed in Mumbai and he is unable to meet with the minister to show him the Edu-Link. Even though the minister has Edu-Link 1, he is unwilling to accept that alone as proof that he should accept the bid of the missionary group. Jason and Marvin agree that Marvin, using the Edu-Link 2, will demonstrate the device to the minister from Odyssey. The minister is very impressed that Marvin, a kid himself, can so easily work the device, and promises to call Marvin back after summoning the Prime Minister to look at the Edu-Link.

A well-rested Whit and Eugene meet with Marvin and Connie after the presentation and discuss the assistance from God they feel they received. Jason calls and lets them know that the Prime Minister wants to move forward with their proposal, giving them the opportunity to reach millions of children across India. The gang agree that with God, nothing is impossible.

Quotes

John Whittaker: Yes, this deadline may be impossible. But what may be impossible for us, is very possible for God.

Eugene Meltsner: It was already impossible to finish the Edu-link on time. And now it's even impossibler.
Connie Kendall: Eugene, you just used the word "impossibler!"
Eugene Meltsner: It's a neologism.

Eugene Meltsner: I hereby announce that the Edu-link and all it's components are hereby functioning within their expected norms of capacity.
Marvin Washington: Huh?
Eugene Meltsner: It works!

Marvin Washington: Wow, that was quick!
Connie Kendall: Yup. Eugene's the only one I know who can sleep standing up. Here Marvin; help me get him to the couch.

Marvin Washington: I guess we just saw the impossible happen. Huh, Mr. Whittaker?
John Whittaker: I think we saw something even more important than the impossible, Marvin. I think we discovered there's no such thing.

Marvin Washington: <gasp> Wow!
John Whittaker: Marvin, that's a water cooler.

Eugene Meltsner: Hmm. Note: need more ergonomic handle. <beat> Hmm. Note: need more efficient gear ratio.
Marvin Washington: <handle breaks> Oops!
Eugene Meltsner: Hmm. Note: need new assistant.
Marvin Washington: What?
Eugene Meltsner: Mmm. Merely jesting, Master Washington.
