Room Enough for Two

“Room Enough for Two” is episode #514 of the Adventures in Odyssey audio series. It was written by April Higgins, and originally aired on March 29, 2003.

Summary

Liz Horton is excited to see her older brother, Mark, come home, until Mark makes a surprise announcement--he's engaged.

Plot

Liz is very excited to see her brother Mark come home from the army. That is, until she finds that Mark has brought Natalie...his fiancee.

Soon after, Liz is complaining to Whit that she hates Natalie. Natalie is controlling Mark, she says. She won’t let him go water-skiing with Liz. And she even made breakfast for Mark when Liz went especially to get bagels.

Then Liz gets an idea. She tells Natalie that Mark has anger issues, making Natalie nervous around Mark. When Mark figures out what’s going on, he confronts Liz. Why did she lie? he asks. She tells him that she doesn’t like Natalie and that Natalie is no good for him.

Before Mark can argue he gets a call from his commander; his army unit has been called to active duty in Rakistan. Just before he leaves, Liz overhears Mark talking to Natalie, assuring her that everything will be okay and he’ll call whenever he can.

Days later, Liz finds Natalie crying in front of the television. Rebels attacked the U. S. camp in Rakistan. No one knows if he’s okay.

Liz goes to Whit's End where Whit asks her why she has a problem with Natalie crying for Mark. Whit points out that Liz may be feeling replaced by Natalie and Liz says this may be true. Just then, Natalie arrives. Whit tries his best to get the two of them to connect on something, but he’s unsuccessful. Liz then tries a trick of her own. She stages a mock argument with Natalie as a joke on Whit. The two of them end of growing a little closer while playing a fun prank.

Back at home, Liz and Natalie talk about Mark and they learn more about him through each other. Just then, the phone rings. It’s Mark! He tells them that the fighting has stopped and he may be home soon. The whole family rejoices while Liz tells Mark that she was wrong about Natalie. She now says she can’t wait until their wedding.

Discussion Questions

  1. Why didn’t Liz like Natalie when she first came?
    • What changed her mind?
  2. Whit said that when his second child was born, "his love wasn’t cut in half, it was doubled." Why do you think it works that way?
  3. Liz was being a little selfish about sharing Mark with Natalie. Can you think of any ways in your life that you might be acting selfishly?
    • How can you fix it?

Trivia
  • The first mention of the Horton's financial difficulties appears in this episode when it's mentioned the family had to sell their van due to financial difficulties. This would culminate in #518: “The Case of the Disappearing Hortons” when the family would be evicted due to Dale Horton losing his job.
Allusions
