Matthew 11:2-19

2When John heard in prison what Christ was doing, he sent his disciples

3to ask him, "Are you the one who was to come, or should we expect someone else?" 4Jesus replied, "Go back and report to John what you hear and see: 5The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cured, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is preached to the poor. 6Blessed is the man who does not fall away on account of me." 7As John's disciples were leaving, Jesus began to speak to the crowd about John: "What did you go out into the desert to see? A reed swayed by the wind? 8If not, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? No, those who wear fine clothes are in kings' palaces. 9Then what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. 10This is the one about whom it is written: "'I will send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way before you.' 11I tell you the truth: Among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist; yet he who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. 12From the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven has been forcefully advancing, and forceful men lay hold of it. 13For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John. 14And if you are willing to accept it, he is the Elijah who was to come. 15He who has ears, let him hear. 16"To what can I compare this generation? They are like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling out to others: 17"'We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not mourn.' 18For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, 'He has a demon.'

19The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, 'Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and "sinners." ' But wisdom is proved right by her actions."

“The Big Deal, Part 2” is episode #450 of the Adventures in Odyssey audio series. It was written by John Fornof, and originally aired on October 7, 2000.

Summary

Aubrey Shepard takes an Imagination Station adventure to meet the biblical John the Baptist.

Plot

While Micah is off completing the mission given to him by John the Baptist, Aubrey returns to John to bring him food. Upon arriving she is told by a guard that he has been ordered to appear before King Herod. The guard tells her that if she wants to hear him she can go over to the palace. She easily finds him because his voice could be heard easily. Aubrey listens as John is speaking to Herod. She finds that Herod believes John is a righteous prophet (though he doesn't listen to what he says), but Herod's wife, Herodius, thinks that John deserves to die. Aubrey finally meets up with John in the jail, and he explains to her the reason that he stood up to Herod. He further explains that he will fade away, but the Messiah will not. Aubrey tells him that she's going to try to get him out of the jail.

Back at the palace, she is not allowed in. However, in a side room, she finds Salome, Herod's daughter, singing and dancing. When Salome accidentally breaks a vase, Aubrey agrees to take the blame for the vase if Salome will get her a way to see Herod. Salome readily agrees.

Once inside the party, Aubrey begs Herod to release John, but he won't listen to her. However, when Salome dances for him, he promises her anything she wants. Salome asks for a minute to think it over and goes into the hallway, where Aubrey meets her. Aubrey is begging her to ask for John the Baptist, when Herodius shows up and agrees with Aubrey. She says Salome should ask for John the Baptist, but only ask for his head. When Aubrey protests, Herodius throws her out of the palace. She finds Micah and together they go to the prison to see Jarus, but when they get there they find that it is too late. John is already dead. Just as suddenly as it began, the Imagination Station adventure ends. Whit is there to comfort her. He asks her if she would like to talk about what happened. Aubrey says that she wants to go home to talk to her parents and that she has a lot of thinking to do.

Discussion Questions

  1. John the Baptist had to stand up to Herod and tell him what he was doing was wrong. Why did he say he stood up to him?
  2. Can you think of any times when someone today might have to stand up to the authorities?
  3. John died because he stood up for what he believed. Not everyone who stands up for their beliefs dies for them, but they often go through other hardships. What other ways do people today suffer for their beliefs?
