James 1:16-18

16Don't be deceived, my dear brothers.

17Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.

18He chose to give us birth through the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of all he created.

The Search for Whit, Part 2

“The Search for Whit, Part 2” is episode #356 of the Adventures in Odyssey audio series. It was written and directed by Paul McCusker, and originally aired on May 25, 1996.

Summary

Jason and Eugene get a cryptic message from Whit in the Middle East, which leads them on a wild investigation that could change Christian history as we know it.

Plot

The-search-for-whit2.png

Eugene and Jason search Aharoni, the site of Whit's archeological dig, for clues to Whit's disappearance. Alfred Brownlee's assistant, Benjamin, interrupts their visit and kidnaps Jason. Jason realizes that the kidnappers just want information about his father and won't hurt him, so he leaves.

During his meeting later with Tasha Forbes, Jason is angry to discover that the Agency lied to Whit about the work they'd contracted with him to do in the Middle East. Whit's life may be in danger because the Agency wasn't completely honest with him. They weren't trying to draw out bootleggers, they were trying to capture the leaders of terrorist groups!

Later, in the hotel elevator, an old man demands money from Eugene. It is Whit in disguise! Whit explains that he found a first-century parchment which appears to be a gospel, and that it does in fact have directions to the tomb of Jesus. He arranges for Eugene and Jason to meet him at 3:00 that afternoon. He then told them that he might have found out where the bones are! He also told them to meet him at 2:00 pm at a restaurant. The cleaning lady that Eugene had mistaken for Whit was actually a spy!

This plot section is too short and should be expanded. »

Discussion Questions

  1. Why were people so willing to commit violence to find Whit and get to the Q Parchment?
  2. Why was Eugene so concerned about what the parchment would say, and so afraid they might actually find the bones of Jesus?

Trivia
  • As Eugene is waiting for the elevator in this episode, he recites, "The rain in Spain stays mainly on the plain." This is a quote from the movie My Fair Lady.
  • Whit's comment to Eugene during this episode's elevator scene about Eugene sputtering (to which Eugene reacts with light laughter) is a reference to Whit's similar comment to Eugene in #232: “Thy Kingdom Come”.
  • The real-life Jerusalem Central Bus Station is located on Jaffa Road in Tel Aviv, matching Whit's directions to Jason and Eugene in this episode. In addition, Whit tells them to meet him at the Egged bus terminal - a real-life Israeli bus company. Once on the bush they go to the Kidron Valley, where Whit conducted excavations. Beginning in 1989, the Kidron Valley was the site of actual archaeological excavations of Second Temple period burial grounds.

Quotes

Jason Whittaker: Listen, Benjamin, your threats don't scare me.
Benjamin: They should. Now oblige us.
Jason Whittaker: Us? What, do you have a mouse in your pocket or are you just schizophrenic?

Jason Whittaker: Dad's hiding. And when my Dad hides, nobody'll find him. Hide and Seek was a nightmare when we were kids. We spent weeks looking for him.

Eugene Meltsner: How could you possibly know that I have a black leather wallet that was given to me as a Christmas present?
John Whittaker: <breaking character> Well, because I gave it to you.
Eugene Meltsner: What? B-b-but it's not possible!
John Whittaker: Hi, Eugene! It's good to see you again!
Eugene Meltsner: ...Mr. Whittaker!

Jason Whittaker: <sighs> I wonder why the elevator's taking so long.
Tasha Forbes: Jason, I-I really am sorry about this. Please don't take it the wrong way.
Jason Whittaker: You lied to my father and put him in a potentially life-threatening situation. Oh, I won't take it the wrong way!

Tasha Forbes: Right now, I don't care about the truth of Whit's parchment—if it exists! It could be nursery rhymes, for all it matters to me! I'm here to get the bad guys.

Eugene Meltsner: It's me, Eugene Meltsner! Let's go into the bathroom.

Jason Whittaker: Eugene, that's a cleaning lady.
Eugene Meltsner: What?
Jason Whittaker: I think that's my dad one floor down.

Jason Whittaker: It's good to see you—though you've aged quite a lot since I last saw you!
Eugene Meltsner: That's his disguise, Jason!
Jason Whittaker: I know, Eugene.
