B-TV: Compassion

“B-TV: Compassion” is episode #345 of the Adventures in Odyssey audio series. It was written and directed by Phil Lollar, and originally aired on February 10, 1996.

Summary

Bernard Walton, Eugene, and the B-TV crew talk about compassion with the help of Marty the shoemaker.

Plot

It’s another episode of “B-TV!” The topic this time is compassion. The sketches include the story of a poor shoemaker named Marty who wants to see Jesus; a game show called “Who’s Got Compassion?” where contestants pit their knowledge against one another to answer the question, “Who’s got compassion?”; and a blind man named Bartimaeus who was in dreadful need of some compassion, and received it from a Savior named Jesus.

This plot section is too short and should be expanded. »

Discussion Questions

  1. What is compassion?
  2. Why is it important that we have compassion for others?
  3. Name some ways that Jesus has shown you compassion.

Notes

Trivia
  • The game show featured in this episode is a possible spoof of Wheel of Fortune's Toss up Round, though this feature would not be introduced into the game proper until that series' 2000-01 season (several years after this episode had initially aired).
  • The story of Marty heard in this episode is adapted from a classic short story called "Shoemaker Martin" by Brigitte Hanhart, which was itself an adaptation of “Where Love is, God is" by Leo Tolstoy. The story was also adapted into a Radio Theatre production.
  • William Shakespeare is voiced in this episode by Corey Burton, who also plays Edwin Blackgaard's personal assistant, Walter Shakespeare.
  • This episode was part of an AIO Activity Pack, I Want My B-TV!
  • Dale Martwinkle's name is an anagram of Wink Martindale, the real-life (and highly prolific) game show host. A similar gag would be used for Marty Winkdale in #417: “Not-So-Trivial Pursuits”.
  • Similarly, Dan Perdue's name is a spoof of longtime NBC staff announcer Don Pardo; who was announcer for the original 1960s version of Jeopardy! as well as most famously delivering the opening "Live From New York, It's Saturday Night" line for Saturday Night Live from that show's beginning in 1975 until his death in 2014.

Quotes

Eugene Meltsner: I have it now. I'm all prepared. Compassion is a sympathetic consciousness of others distress together with a desire to alleviate it.
Bernard Walton: Meaning?
Eugene Meltsner: Feeling sorry for someone.

William Shakespeare: Wilt thou plucketh out mine beard and blow it in mine face? I resenteth thou thine insinuation, poppinjay!

Sam Johnson: Did you know that one meaning of the Greek words for compassion is to be moved down to the pit of your stomach? Sort of like having a gut feeling.
