“Soaplessly Devoted” is episode #295 of the Adventures in Odyssey audio series. It was written by Marshal Younger, and originally aired on December 31, 1994.

Summary

Jason programs the Room of Consequence so that Erica Clark can actually live in Medical Center of Love, her favorite soap opera.

Plot

Erica lives and breathes a certain soap opera called “Medical Center of Love.” Her parents don’t know this, but Erica plans her whole day around watching the soap. She reveals her devotion to Jason, and he comes up with a plan to show her how trashy and immoral soap operas really are.

Jason reprograms the Room of Consequence so that Erica actually becomes her favorite character in “Medical Center of Love,” Holly Donahue. Erica has a blast — at first. But soon, the excitement and glamor wear off, and the soap opera life becomes tiring and tedious. Before long, it becomes downright silly and stupid! When all of the other characters rob, cheat and betray her, Holly (Erica) has finally had enough — of both the Room of Consequence program and of soap operas. She goes back to being Erica — and that’s more than good enough for her.

This plot section is too short and should be expanded. »

Discussion Questions

  1. Why was Erica so caught up in “Medical Center of Love”?
  2. Why was Jason so concerned about Erica’s obsession with the program?
  3. Do you watch soap operas?
    • How about other television shows?
      • Do you listen to radio programs?
        • Are you as addicted to them as Erica was to her show?

Notes

Trivia
Allusions
  • The character of Victoria from this episode references famous actress Tallulah Bankhead and her trademark way of calling everybody "darling."
  • When Erica (as Holly) is receiving her Academy Award for Best Actress, she says "You like me! You really like me!" This is a spoof of Sally Field's famous Oscar acceptance speech, which contained the line "I can't deny the fact that you like me, right now! You like me!"
Audio
  • This episode has a great line coming from the TV in the background. The soap opera announcer says: "For every heartache... don’t self-medicate. Check into the ‘Medical Center of Love.’"
  • When Erica's rights are read towards the end of the show, they include the right to remain silent, the right to an attorney, the right to not over-react, and the right to eat healthy food.

Quotes

Holly Donahue: ...Derek will never love me!
Erica Clark: No! Not again! Derek loves you -- he just doesn't communicate it very well!
Holly Donahue: Victoria? Get me my travel agent. I want a one-way ticket to Alaska.
Derek: Hang up that phone, Holly.
Holly Donahue: Derek! What are you doing here? I thought you were in the hospital!
Derek: I ignored doctors' orders, ripped out my own IV and jogged two miles to say this to you: Holly, I love you.

Erica Clark: Now, before I go in, Mr. Whit's son...
Jason Whittaker: Please, call me Mr. Whittaker.

Derek: A little thing like five thousand miles can't separate us!

Lieutenant Mitchell: I'd like to speak to Miss Donahue, please.
Trevor Donahue: Miss Donahue? <nervous laugh> Who's that? There's no one here by that name. And how dare you accuse her of rigging the awards!

Erica Clark: I don't have any secrets.
Derek: Are you sure?
Erica Clark: I'm in the seventh grade. What kind of secrets would I have?

Holly Donahue: Oh, Derek! <sigh> But... what about Hailey?
Derek: Hailey? I never loved her.
Holly Donahue: Oh, Derek! <sigh> Wait a minute... what about Alexandra?
Derek: Alexandra means nothing to me.
Holly Donahue: Oh, Derek! <sigh> Oh yeah... and Lillian. What about her?
Erica Clark: Oh no! She mentioned... Lillian!
Derek: Lillian? We're just friends. Besides, she moved to San Francisco, too long of a commute.
Holly Donahue: Oh, Derek! You're so... practical. <sigh>
