Scripture

1 Corinthians 9:14-16

14In the same way, the Lord has commanded that those who preach the gospel should receive their living from the gospel.

15But I have not used any of these rights. And I am not writing this in the hope that you will do such things for me. I would rather die than have anyone deprive me of this boast.

16Yet when I preach the gospel, I cannot boast, for I am compelled to preach. Woe to me if I do not preach the gospel!

A Prayer for George Barclay

“A Prayer for George Barclay” is episode #262 of the Adventures in Odyssey audio series. It was written and directed by Paul McCusker, and originally aired on April 2, 1994.

Summary

After losing his job, George Barclay and family are trying to cope with not having a regular paycheck. Jimmy and Donna pray for their dad to get a job, but get a very unexpected answer.

Plot

George Barclay has been out of steady work for some time. He’s kept himself busy doing odd jobs, but mostly he has been waiting on the Lord to direct his life. That’s not good enough for Jimmy and Donna, though. They decide the Lord needs some extra pushing, so they pray earnestly for their father. The next day, George’s old company offers him a new job, one with better benefits.

The family is ecstatic, until George says that he’s not sure if he should actually take the job. After lots of prayer, George drops the bombshell that he’s not accepting the job. Instead, he believes that God is calling him into ministry. Jimmy and Donna are stunned. But there is yet another surprise: Mary Barclay is pregnant! Change is in store for the Barclays. They have little choice but to place themselves in God’s hands.

Discussion Questions

  1. Did Jimmy and Donna pray for their father in the right way?
    • Why or why not?
  2. What does it mean to be called into the ministry?
    • Is it a choice you make?
    • Explain.
  3. How do you think George knew that God wanted him to be a minister?
    • How can you best determine what God’s will is for your life?

Notes

Trivia
  • In 1993, the Barclays’ lives had changed when George lost his job. But since then, not much of anything had happened to them, except their trip to Hawaii in #256: “Aloha, Oy!, Part 1”. It was time to move the family forward, so in 1994, George was sent into the ministry.
  • There is a continuity error in that George Barclay was laid off from his previous job because the manufacturing plant was closing. However, he interviews and is offered a job from the same company. It's possible that one way both can still be true is that George had a job related to the manufacturing plant, but the office simply didn't close. That would make it possible for George to both be laid off due to the closure of the local plant and for him to interview with the same company for a different job.

Quotes

Jimmy Barclay: Where'd you learn to pray like that?
Donna Barclay: What do you mean?
Jimmy Barclay: You sounded like an adult. What'd you do, read it somewhere?
Donna Barclay: Cut it out. It's rude to critique people's prayers. I wasn't talking to you anyway.

Mary Barclay: Did they like your new tie?
Jimmy Barclay: ...Did they like his tie, Mom?
Mary Barclay: Well, I picked it out.

John Whittaker: The best is yet to come.

Mary Barclay: Donna, Jimmy... I'm pregnant.
Kids: WHAT??
