Scripture

Luke 15:8-10

8"Or suppose a woman has ten silver coins and loses one. Does she not light a lamp, sweep the house and search carefully until she finds it?

9And when she finds it, she calls her friends and neighbors together and says, 'Rejoice with me; I have found my lost coin.'

10In the same way, I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents."

Summary

Wooton Bassett returns to Odyssey from his honeymoon with two problems – Penny is missing and he's lost his memory!

Plot

Whit and Connie are preparing for the after-school rush at Whit's End, with ice cream, glasses, and paper towels. Connie shows Whit Wooton and Penny’s wedding photos and notes how weird it would be for them to be actually married, although Whit points out that they’ll still be the same people they’ve always been. Just then, Wooton frantically rushes in, asking where Penny is. She’s missing! Not only that, Wooton’s memory is gone! Connie and Whit ask Wooton to tell the last time he remembered seeing Penny, and Wooton answers: his wedding day. Seeing the problem, Whit suggests a trip to the hospital, but Wooton desperately tries to remember first. He recalls waking up at the Buffalo, NY airport without Penny, then calling her (with an airport phone, because something happened to his), having her paged, and combing the airport for her; all with no success. He left a message on her answering machine saying to call Connie; Connie says that she hadn’t yet. After Wooton’s woe over losing his wife and mind, Whit tells Wooton he has no choice: he’s going to the hospital.

Wooton fully checks out at the hospital, except for his bloodwork results, which haven’t been completed yet. Dr. Graham tries to calm Wooton’s panic as she goes to check it. Wooton consents to wait in his room while Whit steps out to talk to Dr. Graham. She tells Whit two things. First, since it doesn’t look like Wooton was a victim of violence, Penny probably wasn’t either, and so she’s likely searching for him, too. Second, there is a way to get Wooton to remember: telling him about his memories to bring the others back. When Whit returns, Wooton sets up a voicemail that he can check from the hospital to see if Penny calls. So far, she hasn’t. Wooton describes remembering bits and pieces before his wedding, but no particulars. Suddenly, Whit and Connie remember that postcards were sent to them! Connie’s postcard was from the plane. In it, Penny described sitting next to a woman who knitted her a hat. That’s enough to trigger Wooton’s memory.…

Penny says she took the middle seat because Wooton likes the window seat. The woman, Francine, comments that they’ll have a lovely honeymoon, to which Penny replies that she still doesn’t know where they’re going. “Paris is a lovely place for a honeymoon,” Francine says, to Wooton’s chagrin. Francine offers to knit Penny a yellow hat as a honeymoon gift. On one condition: they must stay completely silent.…

And that’s all he can remember. Whit tries next, telling Wooton about the postcard he received from Penny in Paris. Wooton made friends with the bellhop at the hotel, who, on his day off, took the couple to see the Eiffel Tower. His name was (and Wooton remembers) Ernest. Wooton describes his conversation with Ernest, discussing the Tower, their plans in Paris, and Wooton’s butchering of French.

“And then it just goes blank.” Whit steps out to give Jason a call, asking about the postcard Jason got. In the meantime, Wooton calls his voicemail. He has a message! From Penny! She’s checked in to the hotel and is calling from the front desk (because her phone got run over), she’s sorry they had to be rebooked on separate flights, she says she saw the museum that looks like it’s wearing a red hat. That’s all. For more clues, Connie tries to log in to Wooton’s email account, with no luck. Whit comes back with lunch, and is soon followed by Jason, who tells Wooton that Wooton went to London and sang with the Pool Boys. In fact, Jason has a video of it from the internet: Wooton and the band crooning a special rendition of “I’m in the Deep End Over You.” After watching, Jason suggests checking Connie’s email. She says that Penny said she wouldn’t send any emails, but she looks anyway. Meanwhile, Whit steps out and calls the hotel in London to see if Wooton mentioned any travel plans to Pablo, the concierge he thanked on stage with the Pool Boys. Connie finds an email from Penny saying that they missed their flights and she’s waiting at the police station so she has time to send an email anyway. And there’s a link: a video of Wooton and Penny skydiving! A very scared Wooton is shoved out of a plane by Penny, and the two fall to the ground, safely landing. Penny says it was a way for Wooton to overcome his fears. “Yeah, it didn’t work,” Wooton gripes. Whit then walks in and says that the London hotel doesn’t have any employees named Pablo. Strange…

Just then, Dr. Graham returns with updates. Wooton’s bloodwork was fine, with one exception. He was drugged by someone. The drug, called Clibriapoxide, is a rare, experimental drug that temporarily erases the patient’s memory. ‘Temporarily,’ that’s the good news, but the bad news is that because the drug is rare, that means someone drugged Wooton on purpose! Penny needs to be found – soon! “If these people have access to untested drugs,” Jason warns, “who knows what they’re capable of.”
