[edit] Summary

Vandalism hits Odyssey, including Whit's End. Sam and Lucy have their bikes stolen (and then Sam's is returned). Bart criticizes mayor Tom Riley for all the vandalism.

[edit] Plot

The trouble starts with a wave of vandalism against Odyssey First Church, Whit’s End, and other places. Everyone is wondering what in the world is happening.

Meanwhile, Jack is again beset with strange dreams. He specifically dreams that he’s in a forest. Little fires suddenly shoot up all around him, then are quickly put out by little pools of water. Jack realizes what the fire part of the dream means when Whit’s End is vandalized. Later, in a conversation with Connie, Jack guesses that the little pools in his dream might be a symbolic way to fight the crime wave that has suddenly befallen the town. Jack takes action.

While all this is going on, Sam and Lucy head up to Trickle Lake for an outing. When they try to go back, they discover their bikes have been stolen. A strange phone call leads Sam to the Wonderworld tree house. There, a mysterious figure gives Sam back the bikes. Sam jumps the figure, pulls off his disguise, and finds that it is Butch! Sam pumps Butch for information, he guesses the Bones of Rath must be behind all this. Butch wants to do the right thing, but he is also influenced by the Bones. He turns from Sam and leaves. And, as if all this weren’t enough, Bart Rathbone now uses the vandalism around town as an excuse to attack Tom Riley’s abilities as mayor. What is going on around Odyssey?

[edit] Discussion Questions

  1. Why did Jack think his dream was significant?
  2. Why did Butch give back the bicycles? Why wouldn’t he go with Sam?
  3. What is the best way to fight evil?
