Description

Once called "everyone's favorite weasel," Philip Glossman was a recurring character from the early days of AIO up until the end of the eleven-part Darkness Before Dawn story arc. He was voiced by Paul McCusker.

Glossman works for the government in some undefined capacity. He never specifically defines exactly what his role as a government representative or formal job description is despite repeated inquiries by multiple characters on numerous occasions. He never shows a badge and it is questionable exactly what legitimate range of authority, if any, his role as a public servant actually gives him. He is a flunky of Dr. Regis Blackgaard.

History

Philip Glossman first appeared as a member of the city council in flashbacks during the 1987 episode #19: “Recollections”, opposing the attempts of Jenny Whittaker to save the Fillmore Recreation Center from destruction. He was also flustered at the fact the Universal Press Foundation outbid the Webster Development Firm by half a million dollars by an effort spearheaded by Jenny's widowed husband Whit.

Glossman did not reappear until the 1989 two-part episode #77: “The Nemesis, Part 1”. This time, he supported Dr. Regis Blackgaard's attempt to open an arcade named Blackgaard's Castle.

A year later in 1990, Glossman was forced to resign his city council position after making racist remarks in #129: “Not One of Us”. Despite this, he was back two years later, this time working for the state Department of Transportation. During this episode, #202: “Timmy's Cabin”, he attempted to build a highway through Tom Riley's Apple Farm and level the cabin rebuilt by Timmy Riley, the deceased son of Tom Riley. Despite ultimately being thwarted, this was not the last time he would return to Odyssey.

In 1994, not long after the abrupt departure of Whit, Tom ran for mayor. Philip Glossman reappeared, along with two men from the Environmental Detection Agency. They attempted to discredit Tom by creating a scandal involving the Edgebiter Chemical Company. The attempt failed and Tom won the election.

Glossman's final appearances as a main character came during 1995's dramatic Darkness Before Dawn story arc. During the eleven-part arc, Glossman aided Dr. Blackgaard's attempts to take over Whit's End. Glossman was arrested soon after Blackgaard's hired muscle Jellyfish admitted to the Odyssey police both his and Glossman's involvement in Blackgaard's schemes.

Glossman made a final (to date) cameo appearance in #631: “A Capsule Comes to Town”, in which he is being interviewed by Bryan Dern. Here it is revealed (by Bryan Dern's use of the word "lives," rather than "lived") that Glossman still, even after all his misdeeds, resides in Odyssey -- even though he detests it for being "stuck in the past."

Paul McCusker, the voice of Glossman, joked on the 1/26/11 official podcast that Glossman was "in a Mexican jail for selling illegal velvet Elvises."

Quotes

Philip Glossman: In this case, I guess you could call me the Governor’s all-around... troubleshooter.
Connie Kendall: Troublemaker, you mean.
Jack Allen: Connie. Have you offered either of these gentlemen anything to drink?
Connie Kendall: No.
Eugene Meltsner: I could come up with something in my chemistry set—for Mr. Glossman, I mean.
Jack Allen: Now children, let's be on our best behavior.

#327: “Moving Targets”

Jellyfish: <with an accent> Room service, Mr. Glossman!
Philip Glossman: Room service? I didn’t order any room serv—
Jellyfish: <laughing> I can’t believe you fell for that. It’s the oldest trick in the book.
Philip Glossman: What are you doing? We can’t be seen together. Do you know how dangerous this is?
Jellyfish: Cool your jets. No one saw me.
Philip Glossman: How can you be sure? You may have been followed.
Jellyfish: In this town? They roll up the sidewalks at dinnertime.

#328: “Hard Losses”

Philip Glossman: Okay, Riley. You go ahead and move yourself into your mayor's office. But you don't have the slightest idea what you've gotten yourself into. You haven't seen the last of us—not by a long shot.

#287: “Tom for Mayor, Part 2”

Jellyfish: Hehe. This town is as good as ours!
Philip Glossman: Well, don't get greedy. Remember who we're working for.

#328: “Hard Losses”

Philip Glossman: It's the warmth of our relationship that I appreciate so much.

#286: “Tom for Mayor, Part 1”

Sam Johnson: We recorded a tape of the agents confessing that they rigged the test results!
Philip Glossman: Excuse me! Ah, hold on, hold on. Philip Glossman here. On behalf of the state government, I demand that you give me that tape.
Eugene Meltsner: With all due respect, Mr. Glossman... we'd rather make two dozen copies, and then give you the tape!

#287: “Tom for Mayor, Part 2”

Philip Glossman: There we go. A fine-looking sign. By the order of Odyssey, until further notice, Whit's End is closed.

#329: “The Return”
