[edit] Summary

Bernard and Eugene tell the story of the Fiery Furnace.

[edit] Plot

Marsha wants to use BEAVRS to look up a story she calls “The Fiery Furnace Rescue.” Unfortunately, the machine isn’t working. Eugene, who is attempting to repair it, doesn’t know how long it will take to fix. Marsha is not happy, but just then, Bernard Walton appears. Bernard knows the story well and offers to tell it to Marsha. She accepts. But whenever Bernard starts talking, Eugene interrupts with corrections and more information than Marsha needs. Finally, Eugene and Bernard compromise and become a story-telling duo. Marsha hears their unique, exciting, and insightful rendition of four young Hebrew men named Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. Marsha learns how the Lord God protected the four Hebrews from unlawful food, unscrupulous political climbers, a fiery furnace, and a powerful, egotistical king.

[edit] Discussion Questions

  1. Why did Daniel and his friends refuse to eat the king’s food?
  2. What did the king’s strange dream mean?
  3. Why did Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego refuse to bow down before the statue?
    1. Would you have bowed down or gone instead into the fiery furnace?
