Groundhog Jay

“Groundhog Jay” is episode #723 of the Adventures in Odyssey audio series. It was written by Bob Hoose and Dave Arnold, and originally aired on December 1, 2012.

Summary

After Jay pushes Priscilla into an unexpected trip in the Room of Consequence, the two of them experience the same event over and over again.

Plot

Barrett Jones and Priscilla Peterson are talking by the Room of Consequences when Jay Smouse walks up. After a brief conversation, Barrett walks off and Jay tricks Priscilla into the room. The adventure begins and the two find themselves at Whit's End during a birthday party. During the party Connie Kendall spills a tray of ice cream floats. An older boy named Harry arrives and drags Jay outside.

Just before Harry can punch Jay, they find themselves in Whit's End again and Priscilla guesses that the program reset, which is confirmed when Connie spills the ice cream floats again. Harry once again shows up and addresses Jay as Barrett before dragging him back out and resetting the program. This time Jay makes a break for the back door and bumps into Connie before Priscilla stops Connie from spilling the ice cream floats. She then realizes that the program can be changed. Harry however follows them both outside and the program resets once again.

This time around, Priscilla suggests the two go outside the front door and they see Harry coming and the two decide to hide in the bushes. Harry comes with his younger brother Mike (a) and when he leaves, they decide to follow Mike for clues. They follow him into a toy store and overhear him asking about a birthday gift that Harry bought for Mike that was stolen. Then they follow Mike through McAlister Park until he goes to a house at the edge of the park. That causes Jay to panic and try to flee before they see Harry and hide in the bushes again. Harry comes dragging the program version of Jay and, after asking Mike a few questions, Jay comes back out as Barrett and forces Harry to reset the program.

At Whit's End, Jay helps Connie with the ice cream floats and reveals that Vance King forced Jay to steal Mike's bike. After Connie spills the birthday cake, Harry arrives and, with Priscilla's help, Jay explains who took the bike and that Jay should be disciplined by his parents, finally ending the program. Waiting outside is Barrett, and he reveals that he witnessed Jay taking the bike. He also mentions that Whit helped him program the adventure so that Jay could experience things from Barrett's point of view. Jay then leaves to tell his parents and return the bike.

Quotes

Jay Smouse: He's about this tall, with a trombone, and has a face like a leprechaun.
Priscilla Peterson: JAY!!
Jay Smouse: Minus the beard.

Jay Smouse: Here comes Harry the barbarian! Hide! Quick! The bushes!
Priscilla Peterson: Oh, not again. Ow, ow, ow, ow. How do you get used to this?
Jay Smouse: You build up a tolerance.

Jay Smouse: Excuse me, Mr. America.
Other Jay Smouse: Oh. Pardon me.

Connie Kendall: You guys are here just in time-
Jay Smouse: For cake!!

Priscilla Peterson: What would Barrett say?
Jay Smouse: Barrett? I don't know. How about: Duh...

Jay Smouse: Anyways, to put it in a little Spanish lingo: I'm donerito!

Jay Smouse: But no time to talk. I've got to buy a life insurance policy, return a bike, and go get grounded. Probably for eternity. Au revoir-voir!

Harry (d): So, did you have something to tell me, or not?!
Jay Smouse: I like your shirt... it's a good color for you...
