The Chosen One, Part 2

“The Chosen One, Part 2” is episode #606 of the Adventures in Odyssey audio series. It was written and directed by Marshal Younger, and originally aired on December 16, 2006.

Summary

A runaway girl named Kelly arrives at Whit's End. When her story comes out, the Washingtons are faced with a life-changing decision.

Plot

Whit reveals to the gang at Whit's End that he has contacted the proper authorities. Kelly will be taken away from her mother temporarily and be placed in a foster home until her mother gets a court hearing. The authorities told Whit that Kelly has had a troubled past - her father left them, her mother's boyfriends all faded away, and churches asked her not to come back. They all admit that they have become another set of people who rejected Kelly.

That night, as the Washingtons eat dinner, Whit drops by to tell them that the social worker assigned to Kelly's case told Whit that Kelly had requested to stay with Ed. Elaine questions whether that would even be possible, Tamika complains about Kelly's cigarette usage, and the Washingtons in general are averse to the idea. Ed promises to call DHS and drop by Kelly's foster home to see her.

When he does, he sees the doll he gave Kelly on her bed. Kelly's new Foster Mother tells him that Kelly barely puts the doll down. When Kelly comes back into her room, Ed gives her a gift: Tamika' old keyboard. When Kelly questions why Ed is being so kind to her, Ed tells her that he believes she's a genuinely good girl. Kelly shrugs off his compliment. When Ed questions her about why she asked to stay with them, Kelly says she thought maybe they wouldn't mind since he gave her the doll. Ed invites her over to dinner, promising that God can change Tamika's heart - as well as Kelly's. Kelly considers his offer, then refuses.

Ed and Whit again discuss Kelly's situation. Ed struggles with his decision not to take in Kelly - though he thinks the foster parents are good people he doubts that they are truly a good fit for her. Whit suggests that Ed speak with Eugene, who was a foster child after his parents died. Eugene tells Ed that he was very happy with his foster parents and communicates how special he felt to be in a family that chose him. Still struggling with their decision, Ed calls a family meeting to re-consider taking Kelly in. Marvin has no reservations, eager to have someone in the family to "shake things up". Elaine worries about the financial ramifications but admits that those concerns, while legitimate, aren't really reasons not to take Kelly in. Tamika is wholeheartedly opposed to the idea. She argues that Kelly is the kind of girl her parents wouldn't want her to hang around and questions why they are even still considering it. Ed suggests that God may be leading them to this option and they all agree to sleep on it. He and Elaine, after the kids go to bed, admit that they can't disagree with Tamika's arguments. Ed also admits that he was looking forward to a life with older kids. Elaine suggests that God's plan for them may be more challenging than the plan they had for themselves.

Connie opens the mail at Whit's End to find sixty-five dollars in an envelope. They all recognize the amount as being what was missing from the cash register previously. Whit hypothesizes that Kelly stole the money and returned it. Tamika wonders why Kelly suddenly feels guilty for her actions and drops by her foster home to ask her. Kelly refuses to admit that she felt guilty, even when Tamika encourages her to drop her tough exterior. As Tamika leaves, Kelly asks a question about the keyboard. She confides to Tamika that she has written several songs and Tamika plays Kelly a song she wrote herself. When she returns home, she admits to Ed that she thinks Kelly has a good heart. That night, Ed and Elaine agree that they both believe God wants them to take Kelly into their home. They cancel their weekend away without the kids and express excitement about the next part of their adventure.
