Philippians 4:6-7

6Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Philippians 4:11
11I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances.

Why Don't You Grow Up?

“Why Don't You Grow Up?” is episode #247 of the Adventures in Odyssey audio series. It was written by Charlie Richards and Paul McCusker, and originally aired on October 9, 1993.

Summary

Erica Clark gets in the Room of Consequence to see what it's like to be 22 years old.

Plot

Erica is tired of being a kid. She doesn’t get to do anything fun. She can’t drive a car, make long-distance phone calls, or eat and buy whatever she wants. Erica would much rather be an adult who gets to do all of those things. She complains to Whit about her plight, and he takes her to the Room of Consequence.

After a bit of quick programming, Erica finds that, on the outside at least, she is the ripe old age of 22. She is pleased — at first. But she soon learns that with adulthood comes enormous responsibility — getting and keeping a job, paying bills, being on time, eating properly and managing finances. The lessons Erica learns are difficult. In the end, she realizes that there is a good reason she’s still a kid — Erica’s not ready to be an adult yet.

This plot section is too short and should be expanded. »

Discussion Questions

  1. Why did Erica want to be older?
  2. Why did she fail so miserably at it?
  3. Have you ever wished you were older?
    • What are some good things about the age you are right now?

Erica Clark: Or what?
Mrs. Clark: Or adulthood won't be an option for you.

Erica Clark: I want to be real old, like 22.

Erica Clark: I got asked out on dates by old men. Can you believe that?
Sherri: Ew, like how old?
Erica Clark: I dunno. In their twenties, I guess.
